Alcohol consumption is the sole cause of 85,000 deaths annually in the Americas, PAHO/WHO study finds

Alcohol consumption is the sole cause of 85,000 deaths annually in the Americas, PAHO/WHO study finds
Drinking contributes to more than 300,000 deaths every year. PAHO urges countries in the Americas to limit hours of alcohol sales, ban alcohol advertising, and increase taxes on alcohol.
WASHINGTON, D.C. - Alcohol consumption was responsible for an average 85,000 deaths annually during the period 2013 to 2015 in the Americas, where per capita consumption is 25% higher than the global average, according to a study undertaken by the Pan American Health Organization/WHO and published today in the journal Addiction.
"This study demonstrates that harmful use of alcohol in the Americas is a major public health priority," said Dr. Anselm Hennis, director of PAHO's Department of Noncommunicable Diseases and Mental Health. "It is associated with preventable deaths and many years of life lived with a disability. We need effective, feasible and sustainable interventions, policies and programs to reduce the consumption of alcohol."

Netherlands criticized for inhumane treatment of immigrants and asylums seekers

Netherlands criticized for inhumane treatment of immigrants and asylums seekers
THE HAGUE - Scientists from the Radboud University in Nijmegen determined that the strict interpretation of immigration rules by the Immigration and Naturalization Services (IND) has often caused unfair treatment of immigrants and asylum seekers, the Trouw reported. The SCP, which provides socio-cultural policy advice based on scientific research argued that shortening the waiting period asylum seekers face in obtaining a decision, the more likely they are to quickly integrate into Dutch society.
There have been instances when people with a temporary residence permit are wrongly labeled as fraudsters. As a result, they have to repay all benefits received. In a worst-case scenario, they lose their residence permit and had to leave the country. This was concluded in research carried out by eight scientists at Radboud University in Nijmegen. The scientists also found that applications for family reunification were systematically refused.

Twenty Dutch doctors to Curaçao for corona help: 'They can use all the help'
AMSTERDAM, WILLEMSTAD - Last weekend a total of twenty Dutch doctors and nurses traveled to Curaçao to help the hospitals with corona care. They will also support the Health Department (GGD) to increase the vaccination rate, the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport reports.
To quickly expand those vaccinations, about 30,000 doses were flown in from the Netherlands on Friday. Dutch Undersecretary Blokhuis says it is quite something "to take the plunge so quickly to pause your life in the Netherlands and help people on Curaçao in difficult circumstances".

Fewer homeless people in the Netherlands after years of increase

Fewer homeless people in the Netherlands after years of increase
AMSTERDAM - As of January 2020, there were 36.000 homeless people in total in the Netherlands, which is the first time in years that the number has decreased. The last research in 2018 recorded 39.000 homeless people. According to the Statistics Netherlands, 8 of 10 homeless people are male and live in one of the four biggest cities in the country.
The research also showed that there are now fewer young homeless people (age group 18-27). In 2020 there were 8.5 thousand people in this age group, as opposed to 10.7 thousand back in 2016, which was the last time this age classification was used.

Curaçao receives Dutch aid because of heavy corona wave

Curaçao receives Dutch aid because of heavy corona wave
THE HAGUE, WILLEMSTAD - The Netherlands will send 30,000 extra vaccines against COVID-19 to Curaçao on Friday to combat the full hospitals and the increasing number of corona infections on the island.
Some of the vaccines are destined for Aruba. In addition, the Ministry provides assistance in the form of recruiting medical personnel. It is not known exactly how many people are needed.
Due to an increase in the number of corona infections, the pressure on healthcare in Curaçao is increasing enormously. Prime Minister Eugene Rhuggenaath called the situation "very serious" on Wednesday. Reason for the Netherlands to step in, says a spokesman for outgoing Dutch Undersecretary Paul Blokhuis (Health, Welfare and Sport) on Thursday.
