Three African women from Cameroon, Somalia and the Democratic Republic of the Congo are among the 2021 International Women of Courage Award recipients announced by the U.S. Secretary of State late on Thursday.
Secretary Antony J. Blinken would be hosting the virtual award ceremony on March 8. The First Lady of the United States, Dr. Jill Biden will deliver remarks to recognize the courageous accomplishments of these women, the U.S. Department of State said.

Malalai Maiwand: Afghan female journalist killed by gunmen

Malalai Maiwand was not the first of her family to be targeted. Five years ago, her mother, also an activist, was killed by unknown gunmen.
Kabul, Afghanistan (CNN)The Afghan government has described the killing of female journalist Malalai Maiwand by gunmen on Thursday as "utterly despicable."
Sediqi Sediqi, a spokesperson for President Ashraf Ghani condemned the murder, calling it "cowardly and heinous."
"The Afghan government strongly condemns it and conveys message of condolence and sympathy to her family and friends," Sediqi said in a tweet. "The current senseless violence against our people must end."
