history is political by definition. what they fear is that if we honestly grapple with the fact that we were founded as a slave holding republic, that many of our founders, believed in ideals of liberty for white men and the enslavement of black people, they're pretty clear when they say we learn the history of people learned to hate america. i don't believe that. i think it's very revealing. they think the truth of this country will make people think poorly of this country. so, they don't want our children to get that understanding. now, you and i, know if you learned about the black freedom struggle, you find this is an extremely patriotic struggle. to perfect or country where their own ancestors were in slavery. these were people who don't want our children to think they don't want our children to have empathy. and they really want to enact their very sad vision of america and force it upon all of us. >> so many things that happened in the last few years, including the 16 19 project.

roberts, have both said their attempts to erase history is working for the republican party. i know these voices are pushing back is what terrence roberts said. i also want to point out something sarah huckabee sanders is doing. she's trying to erase history because she doesn't want people to know the degradations of enslavement while she is has also signed a bill allowing child labor. to me these are connected. if your pushing child labor, a new form of slave type labor, low wage child labor, not surprising to me that you don't want people to know the history of enslaved labor. >> right. because when we don't know history, we are not empowered to make a better future. we're not empowered to understand and the levers of oppression that they pull. she simultaneously, or with the same hand, signed a bill that allows the child labor law. this administration, shocking

if and when they get on that debate stage the first debate comes this august. look, they don't necessarily take on donald trump directly, like will hurd does. or like former governor chris christie does. trump is still very popular with the base. these candidates are gonna have to figure out how to differentiate themselves from trump. and say why voters should pick them over the former president, if they want to have any chance of breaking the logjam and getting some delegates, so they can maybe unseat donald trump from the front runner of the pack. >> symone, let's talk about the one candidate trump did. name wrong desantis. his campaign reboot seems to be the beginning with the defense of slavery. what is the strategy here? or is this just him being unable to understand that the enslavement of people was not okay? >> well, it's crazy, zinhle, that we're having to have these conversations. but the reality is, look, first

call a spade a spade. enslavement was not a trade school where you to be a blacksmith or shoe maker or farmer, people were taken from their home countries, brought to the united states, raped, mutilated, brutalized and happened for 400 years compounded, and for you to say that people benefitted is not only ridiculous, it's outrageous. the fact that donalds and kamala harris and scott are on the same page -- >> john: the one point they are on the same page. not on the same page with the overall standards, though. >> byron donalds hit it well. the standards are moving in the right direction. that doesn't mean there doesn't mean to be tweaks to it and corrected. >> john: for desantis to say you are going to side with the state or with kamala. >> it's a misstep on his part, frankly, but you see the desantis campaign and message adjustments in august are fine,
