Climate change rears its ugly head, but Biden steps up to fight it

The good news was that President Biden
The bad news was terrible. Climate change reared its ugly head when winter’s wrath brought death and distress to Texas. The crisis exposed the tragic reality of climate change. Extreme winter weather created an overpowering demand on an outmoded energy grid. Friday Biden will be in the Lone Star state to witness the carnage from climate change.

Texans died while their governor lied. Republican Gov. Greg Abbott said the breakdown of clean energy sources caused the outages. The main culprit, however, was failure of the natural gas system which is a major source of power in the state.

President Joe Biden issued a series of executive orders on January 27 to further confront the “existential threat” of climate change, to reaffirm the executive branch’s commitment to evidence-based policymaking and innovation, and to build on the executive actions
taken on Day 1. This LawFlash provides an overview of several of the key actions under those orders.
ADDRESSING CLIMATE CHANGE AT HOME AND ABROAD
The
Executive Order on Tackling the Climate Crisis at Home and Abroad(Climate Order) aims to spur domestic action and cooperation with international partners to address the impacts of climate change, which the president describes as a “climate crisis.” The Climate Order initiates a series of planned actions at the federal government level, including the creation of new executive-level offices and senior administration roles, a directive to halt new oil and natural gas leases on public lands or offshore waters, and the establishment of an Interagency Working Group on Coal and Power Plant Communities and a White House Environmental Justice Interagency Council. We discuss key components of the Climate Order below.

NEW RESIDENT: A change at the top brings new issues for farmers as President Joe Biden executes his slate of issues. We review our five-part series looking at what's ahead.
Impact of President Biden’s agriculture plan will influence actions on climate, taxes, higher minimum wage, ag trade and WOTUS.
As past Farm Progress surveys show, farmers traditionally vote more conservatively and now find themselves trying to reconcile what the future political outlook will be under the Biden administration after four years of President Donald Trump. As we recently detailed in our five-part series, the sky is not falling, but farmers need to be aware of what could be coming to best navigate the waters ahead.

Biden administration: Tide shifting on climate change discussion

This is the fifth installment of a special multi-part series offering what we might see under the incoming President Joe Biden administration.
The last time there was a significant debate on a climate bill in Congress was 2009, and it failed. Some have even attributed the agricultural sector’s opposition as part of the reason. Fast forward to 2021, and agriculture is no longer seen as the major emitter of greenhouse gas emissions but as part of a potential solution. Climate regulations or stipulations could quickly find their way woven into anything coming out of the White House or advanced in Congress.

Catherine Flowers remembers the moment she realized the environmental justice movement had entered a new era of acceptance and recognition.
It came last spring, the environmental justice activist said, when then-candidate Joe Biden snatched the Democratic nomination from Sen. Bernie Sanders and shortly afterward announced the creation of a joint task force to shape climate change policy. “He talked about environmental justice,” said Flowers, recalling her sense of amazement.

Biden faces tall order in uniting polarized nation

Every president makes a commitment to bipartisanship, but few actually succeed in bringing the parties together.
Biden, who served in the Senate for more than three decades before becoming vice president, thinks he can defy history.
After his party’s wins in Georgia’s Senate runoff elections, Biden will at least have a Democratic House and Senate to help him.
But his majorities are razor-thin, creating a unique challenge for Biden.

Even with congressional majorities, Trump and former Presidents Clinton and George W. Bush ran into trouble.
Clinton’s stimulus plan in 1993 never got real traction and it was torpedoed by Republicans and centrist Democrats in the Senate.

Monday’s passage of a spending bill that includes a number of energy and climate provisions is a big deal to the energy industry and environmental activists, though some say this is just a starting point for enacting President-elect Joe Biden

Included in the legislation are provisions to reduce the use of a climate-warming pollutant, spur renewable and nuclear energy development, and encourage fossil fuel producers to use technology that captures carbon emissions.
Biden called the relief bill a “down payment” on multiple crises facing the U.S.
