Economic affairs minister Bas van ‘t Wout, who took over the job following the resignation of Erik Wiebes in the aftermath the childcare benefit tax scandal, is off sick with an occupational burn-out and will be out for at least three months, the state information service RVD has said.
Van ‘t Wout’s job will be taken over by foreign minister Stef Blok and trade minister Sigrid Kaag will take over Blok’s duties. In addition, a second junior minister will be appointed to the economic affairs department to focus on energy and climate change, the RVD said.

Just 50 not 26,000 homes in the Groningen earthquake area need strengthening to comply with the latest safety standards, according to Johan Atema, director of gas company NAM in the NRC.
So far 2,000 homes have been strengthened because they are vulnerable to the quakes, caused by the ground settling after natural gas has been extracted. And only half the 26,000 homes identified as being problematic have actually been inspected.
Nevertheless, says Atema, this work is not needed because the risk of a serious earthquake is much smaller now drilling for gas has been cut right back. ‘The strengthening operation is no longer necessary,’ he told the paper.

Dutch state considered investing €50m in Hema shares

Dutch state considered investing €50m in Hema shares

The Dutch government last year considered buying shares to the value of €50m in high street staple Hema, to save the company should it fail to reach a deal with its creditors, the NRC said on Friday.
The paper bases its claim on internal documents obtained using freedom of information legislation.
The cabinet’s original plan was to extend the coronavirus support and guarantee rules so that Hema could be bailed out, the paper said.
However, that idea fell foul of European Commision rules which said in May last year the guarantees could only be used to help companies which got into financial difficulty after the end of 2019. Hema has been loss making since 2013.
