Mr Neil told This Morning on ITV that the decision to suspend the rollout of the AstraZeneca vaccine had "the makings of a European tragedy." His remarks come as a number of EU members announced they were freezing the distribution of the Anglo-Swedish drug over safety concerns, against the advice of the European Medicines Agency. Mr Neil also slammed Emmanuel Macron and Angela Merkle for game-playing over the EU's vaccine programme.

The EU's vaccine row continues to erupt, as the bloc's slow roll-out of the jab remains a cause of concern among member states. But despite EU countries lagging behind Israel, the UK and the US, several nations have suspended use of the Anglo-Swedish Covid jab, over safety concerns. Denmark, Ireland and the Netherlands have halted the roll-out of AstraZeneca's jab, after serious side effects were repeated. Norway has also halted use of the vaccine while this afternoon Germany became the latest to stop the rollout.

The jab has also been approved for those aged between 65 and 74 years in France.
President Emmanuel Macron previously described the jab as “quasi-effective” due to inconclusive data.
He has since backtracked on the comments, and said he would take the jab himself.
France has administered a total of 4,839,444 vaccine doses, according to Our World In Data.

EU vaccine 'alliance' backfired before bloc's diplomatic nightmare with Australia | World | News

Australia's Prime Minister Scott Morrison (Image: GETTY)
But it would appear this alliance did not deliver on its aspirations, as so far it has only administered 7.6 jabs per 100 people, a huge gap when compared with rivals the UK (31.2 people) and the US (24.3).
The nations' vow to help finance research into the vaccines also appeared unclear, particularly when compared with the likes of Britain and the US.
According to a report by scientific data company Airfinity, the UK spent £25 per person on early COVID-19 research, committing around £1.67billion to vaccines before knowing their effectiveness.
The US offered £7.9billion, at a rate of £24.02 per person, while the EU lagged behind again, spending just £3.51 per citizen, with an investment of £1.57billion.
