Reclaim Your Face: a call for European citizens to demand facial recognition ban

Access Now, EDRi, and the
Reclaim Your Face coalition are calling for a Europe-wide ban on the use of dangerous facial recognition technologies that perpetuate discrimination, erode privacy, and enable biometric mass surveillance.
Today,
February 17, the coalition is rallying community support to #ReclaimYourFace through the launch of a new
European Citizens’ Initiative (ECI) a unique tool that provides space for European citizens to organize and collectively demand new legislative frameworks.

Facebook Oversight Board Makes First Decisions, But System Remains Flawed

Today, the Facebook Oversight Board published its
first
decisions on five of six cases, for which civil
society feedback was solicited and Access Now submitted
comments.
The Board overturned Facebook’s content removal in four
out of the five cases reviewed.
Of the cases reviewed,
the
only
case for which the Board determined Facebook
was correct in removing content is the case regarding hate
speech in the context of the Armenia and Azerbaijan
conflict.

DSA: European Commission delivers on the first step toward systemic rules for online platforms

Today, December 15, the European Commission launched a legislative reform that holds the promise of systemic regulation of large online platforms, and consists of the Digital Services Act (DSA) and the Digital Markets Act. Access Now’s initial assessment focuses on the DSA, and highlights key issues that will affect human rights in the EU and beyond.  
Access Now has been advocating for a human rights-based and user-centric regulation that will establish clear responsibilities for large online platforms with strong enforcement mechanisms that can hold them to account. 
“Access Now is glad to see that the protection of users’ fundamental rights is one of the main aims of the draft Regulation. We haven’t won the war yet, but noting the protection of human rights as a driving force behind the DSA is certainly a victory in a decisive battle,” ....
