evaporation of one's dignity as one's soul goes into the ether. >> this man spoke at the gridiron dinner 12 or 18 months ago, and he made jokes about donald trump's mental state. he said about donald trump, he said i don't think he's so crazy that you could get him committed into a mental institution, but if he were there, i don't think he would get out. and everybody laughed because it's true. he knows all these people know. >> they all know. >> that donald trump is a narcicisstic psychopath and that he is deranged and he is not fit. you wouldn't trust him to run an ice cream stand. >> right. >> but chris sununu wants to preserve his viability in the republican party. only a few people have decided the game isn't worth the candle. >> the reality is a lot of these people are lawyers. they know he did it. he just lost again. what does he have the pay "the new york times," nearly $400,000 legal costs. he keeps losing actually the

'Evaporation losses are at zero': Recent rainfall increases lake levels

Some lake levels are rising, but even though we’ve seen some rain, the Brazos River Authority said that doesn’t mean the drought is over.

that's a disaster for anybody who thinks donald trump ought to be in jail. >> as they, say but, wait there's more, because georgia is on our mind as well. so shadow to re-charles. thinking about, are you talking about sam cook, why not add him into the mix. let me ask you, georgia in fulton county case, there was a hearing today involving mark meadows, involving raffensperger, facts finding inquiry about whether or not to move that case into the district court of georgia. expanding, of course, the jury pool, based on the fact that mark meadows says, look, i thought this was part of my job. what is your reaction? >> the devil went on to georgia and he found this would have chief of staff, he can do just about anything. it doesn't matter if there is no law on the, books it doesn't matter if there is no policy, i am just a gatekeeper for the president. he wants to make phone calls about things that have nothing to do with the presidency, but have to do with him as a candidate, i am just doing my work as a federal employee. it would be a complete evaporation of the entire idea of what is and is not your role as a federal officer.

huge amount of rainfall. that's what this storm -- the real threat that it poses. >> now, is there a difference between the wildfires potentially that devastated maui and the wildfires in the west and what we're seeing in canada? is the ocean temperature as warm around hawaii as it is here? >> that's a great question. canada in the summer, you're well into mid latitudes. it tends to get quite dry in western canada. we don't expect that for maui, for the tropical islands of hawaii. it's sort of something that we're not used to. we're not used to thinking about extreme drought on the hawaiian islands, but the trend is in that direction. it's been getting warmer, hotter, more evaporation of moisture from the soils, and rainfall has been going down.

it's a double whammy. it was the extreme drought in parts of the island that help facilitate the damage, the extent of those wildfires. it's different dynamics playing out in different places, but the underlying factor, the warming of the planet, increased evaporation rates is common to a lot of these. now, i'll mention one other factor with maui, with the hurricane that sort of went to the south of maui that contributed to the very strong winds. so the winds depend on how large the differences in pressure are. when you have a hurricane to the south, that's really lowering the pressure. it gives you a different gradient in pressure, worse winds. those winds were an important part of the problem. they helped spread the fires, knock down the fire lines. why did it intensify, that hurricane intensify so quickly?

the climate crisis." let's just get right to this, professor. how did climate change play a role in what took place in maui? is it too soon to put a pin on that? what have you been able to decipher? >> thanks, jim, it's good to be with you. no, it isn't. we can talk about how various attributes of climate change sort of laid the groundwork for what played out. first of all, there's a long-term trend towards drying in that region. it's been getting drier, less precipitation. temperature has been increasing as it has around the planet. but that means more evaporation of moisture from soil, so you put those two things together, you're going to get worse drought, and so there's a trend towards worse drought and what we saw, in fact, was extreme drought in parts of the island that were impacted where those wildfires spread rapidly and did so much damage. and there's another ingredient, which is that the winds that helped, for example, knock down those power lines and helped

the surface ocean temperature around the florida keys last week soared to 38 celsius. the temperatures were measured by a series of buoy located in the waters off manatee bay, in the everglades national park. that level of heat is about the same temperature as a hot tub. normally around this time of year it would be aroud 23—31 celsius. and today we got another record, the global average for the oceans, is higher than its ever been 21 celsius in august, which is unusual. if you look at this chart, it shows the average ocean temperatures since 1979. the red line, this year's data. the grey lines show previous years. and you will see it is an upward curve it is getting ever warmer, but those previous peaks were in march, at the end of the summer in the southern hemishphere. and the experts say they are worried. the oceans are vital to help regulate our climate, and the evaporation you have the more moisture you have in the air, which can turbo—charge some of the worlds weather patterns. my colleague in dc, carl nasman, joins me now. carl was a climate change presenter
