Even the possibility of being executed, let alone the reality, is horrible to contemplate for most people. Common fears for people are enclosed spaces, heights, and flying. People also fear the unknown, which definitely includes death. According to the Independent, there are also myths that, after beheading, heads glared or cheeks filled with color. That's pretty disturbing to think about as well.
The guillotine is a device that was specifically constructed to behead people mechanically. According to Britannica, it was introduced to the French in 1792, but similar instruments had been used in other countries, such as Britain and Scotland, for decades, mainly to kill prisoners born to the nobility.

The Most Infamous Murders Of The Victorian Era

Murder is a strange thing. It's an act that to many is absolutely unthinkable, but at the same time fascinating. The idea that a human being — sometimes, a perfectly ordinary-seeming person — could take the life of another is so strange and yet so common.
And this is nothing new — people have, of course, been killing other people since they figured out how to swing a club. Fast forward to the Victorian era, and killers were still killing — they'd just gotten much more creative.
While Jack the Ripper might be the most infamous of the Victorian era's murderers, he definitely wasn't the only one. The era was downright full of dastardly men and women, and some of them committed crimes so heinous they sound like something right out of a crime novel, or Netflix special. But they're not — they're absolutely true, and even though they've been overshadowed by the infamous Whitechapel murders, they're every bit as bizarre.

Why the Haitian Revolution inspired so many rebellions

The Haitian Revolution not only led to Haiti's independence, but it set off a ripple effect of uprisings by enslaved people across the Caribbean and South America. Although not all of the revolts that it inspired were successful, each and every uprising chipped away at the sovereignty of colonial empires.
The Haitian Revolution was in turn inspired by the French Revolution of 1789, which set the standard for the ideals of liberty and freedom that nations had the right to aspire towards. Since the colonies were built on a "foundation of bondage, inequality, and prejudice," the hypocrisy of the French was promptly challenged. While earlier rebellions merely sought to withdraw from colonial society, the Haitian Revolution sought to completely overthrow the system.
