‘Deeply damaging’: Courts rule against challenge to new UK VAT rules

The UK High Court has rules against a legal challenge brought by members of the travel retail industry against the changes to tax-free shopping laws in the country
“The Treasury has baked-in a competitive disadvantage for UK tourism by making this the only country in Europe not to offer tax-free shopping.”
That was the reaction from travel retail industry leaders after the UK’s High Court and Court of Appeal blocked a legal challenge against the country’s new duty-free laws.

Global Blue, sought to challenge a decision by the Government to withdraw the VAT Retail Export Scheme (RES) and the Extra Statutory Concession (ESC) on duty-free and tax-free shopping. ....

Brexit impact: Heathrow loses legal bid over end of tax-free shopping for tourists


Heathrow Airport has lost a High Court bid to challenge the scrapping of tax-free shopping for tourists.
Two schemes providing VAT-free shopping for some international visitors were withdrawn by the Treasury at the end of the Brexit transition period on 1 January of this year.
The Treasury and HMRC’s decision related to the VAT Retail Export Scheme (RES) and an Extra Statutory Concession (ESC) on goods at duty-free and tax-free shops.
The ESC allowed VAT-free sales of goods to passengers travelling outside the EU at airports, and the RES covered VAT refunds on non-airport sales of goods also to non-EU travellers, subject to certain conditions being met. ....

Govt to Introduce Measures in Next Budget to Increase Exports
The government is in the process of drafting major tax-related facilitative measures for exporters in the budget (2021-22) under an integrated strategy to ensure a significant increase in exports of Pakistan.
Top government officials told Propakistani that the government is issuing a new simplified scheme for exporters in the coming budget (2021-22) to allow the import of duties and taxes free input and raw materials consumed in the manufacturing of export goods. Finance Bill 2021 would incorporate the new scheme for exporters.
The exercise has been started to take a viewpoint on the new scheme. The scheme has been drafted and shared with the leading exporter associations for comments. The scheme would integrate all existing export schemes operated by the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR). Presently, different schemes are used by the exporters which would be integrated into a single scheme. ....

A consignment of Dahanu Gholvad sapota (noseberry) has been exported to the United Kingdom from Maharashtra’s Palghar district, providing a major boost to shipments of Geographical Indication (GI) certified products from India.
The Maharashtra Rajya Chikoo Utpadak Sangh holds the GI certification for Gholvad Sapota and the fruit is popular for its sweet and unique taste. The unique taste is believed to be derived from calcium rich soil of the Gholvad village in Palghar district. ....
