conviction today and wilmington, delaware on federal gun charges. the first is the human impact. it must have on a family that has certainly known tragedy, including putting a car crash that killed hunter biden s mom and baby sister, the death to brain cancer of his brother, beau, and his own descendance itself, destruction by crack cocaine. in a moment, ronald reagan s daughter, patty davis joins us to talk about her own struggles with addiction the second fact is that despite efforts to paint his trial as a counterpart, two or even the equivalent of donald trump s new york trial unlike the former president, a hunter biden is not running for anything the third fact is the one thing they actually do have in common in each the guilty verdict was rendered by 12 men and women who heard the evidence and seem to have set aside any preconceptions they might have had going in as one biden juror told cnn today, politics played no part in their deliberations, nor did testimony about the degree of biden s addiction, which he described as heart-wrenching the verdict was unanimous. and just like in new york, there is every indication the criminal justice system worked and continues to beyond that, nearly everything surrounding the two trials and their aftermath is a study in contrast starting with how egypt defendant reacted to the verdict. quoting now from hunter biden statement, thanking his wife and others. i m more grateful today for the love and support i experienced this last week from melissa, my family, my friends, and my community than i am disappointed by the outcome. this was done by the biden administration in order to wound or hurt an opponent, a political opponent and i think it s just a disgrace. but this was a rig decision right from day one, with a conflicted judge or should have never been allowed to try this case, never well, he said as much over and over and so have republican lawmakers before, during and after the trial with a special focus on attacking the justice department and the criminal justice system every single person involved in this prosecution is practically a democratic political operative. this was not criminal justice. this was politics. the entire thing is political. it s political warfare, scam trial. this is a scam. it is a sham, sham of a trial. a sham convictions joe biden s to tier in justice system while keeping them on as they re talking about the justice department at which had nothing to do with the trump trial, which is currently prosecuting a democratic senator and congressmen. and just oversaw the conviction of the president is only surviving son and the president s reaction quoting him now, i will accept the outcome of this case and will continue to respect the judicial process as hunter considers an appeal jill and i will always be there for hunter and the rest of our family with our love and support. nothing will ever change that he also told abc news he d ruled that a pardon for his son let me ask you, will you accept the jury s outcome, their verdict, no matter what it is? yes. and have you ruled out a pardon for your son? yes by contrast, the former president is now talking repeatedly about using the justice department if he s reelected as a tool of vengeance i. would have, every right to go after them and it s easy because it s joe biden and you see all the criminality, all of the money that s going into the family and him, all of this money from china, from russia from ukraine that s for republican lawmakers who decried trump s trial and conviction. consider house oversight chair james comer, who has been holding hearings and investigating the bidens for months, always claiming to have the goods, but always coming up empty. he is sticking to his story, tweeting today until the department of justice investigates everyone involved. the bidens corrupt influence, peddling schemes. it will be clear department officials continued to cover for the big guy, joe biden. more now, on the actual verdict and the actual trial and what comes next from cnn s paula reid just 90 minutes after hunter biden s guilty verdict, cnn got incredible insight into the case from juror number ten, won big mistake from the defense, calling hunters daughter naomi, to testify. i felt i felt bad that they put naomi as witness i i think that was probably a strategy that should not have been done. no daughter should ever have to testify or again, sorry despite feeling badly for hunter and his battles with addiction, the 12 jurors agree that they had no choice but to convict all 12 jurors agree that yes, he know i m laying in, bought a gun when he was an attic or he was addicted to drugs, although they all voted guilty, another juror, cnn spoke to off-camera question whether the case should have been brought in the first place, saying, quote, it seemed like a waste of taxpayer dollars and the jurors interviewed by cnn said politics played no role. in their decision. pressure, inviting never really even came in. to play for me. his name was only brought up one store in the trial and that s when i that s when i kind of sunk in a little bit. but you kind of put that out of your mind. president biden released a statement after his son s verdict saying, in part i am the president, but i am also a dad, jill, and i love our son and we are so proud of the man he is today and i will accept the outcome of this case and will continue to respect the judicial process as hunter considers an appeal contour issued a statement after court thanking his wife and supporters saying, i am more grateful today for the love and support i experienced this last week from melissa, my family, my friends, and my community, than i am disappointed by the outcome in spend special counsel, david weiss made aware statement defending the case, ultimately, this case was not just about objection a disease that haunts families across the united states including hunter biden s family. this case was about the illegal choices defendant made while in the throes of addiction his choice to lie on a government form when he bought a gun. and the choice to then possess that gun hello. what else did did you hear from jurors anderson? i was really interested to hear what they had to say about a possible sentencing hunter biden because the upper range for conviction on these offenses is potentially decades in prison, hundreds of thousands of dollars in fines. so it s widely expected. hunter biden and wouldn t get anything anywhere near that. this is of course, a first-time offender, but juror number ten told us he doesn t think that hunter biden should get any prison time. another juror said that hunter needs rehab more than he needs imprisonment or a fine. and while the jury is weighing in on sentencing it is ultimately actually up to the judge should determine the sentence. and we expect, while there is no sentencing date, now we expect it will be roughly 120 days after this verdict, which would fall in late october so that s before election day. but likely after his next federal criminal trial, which is scheduled for early september out in los angeles i ll read them so much, paula, let s go next to the white house. i ve seen kayla tausche with more and how the president and the first family are dealing with this moment what s the reaction been from the white house for president biden anderson, president biden is approaching the situation first and foremost as a father in the statement released today, president biden saying, i am the president, but i m also a dad, jill and i love our son and we are so proud of the man he is today. so many families who have had loved ones battle addiction, understand the feeling of pride, seeing someone you love come out the other side and be so strong and resilient in recovery, the family greeted each other on the tarmac in delaware this evening, hunter biden, embracing members of white house staff and members of the security detail before the family then retreated to a nearby family home or they re going to be processing together what happens in the next chapter president biden has said that he will accept the judicial process as hunter considers an appeal and the biden reelection campaign is telling allies that for them, it s going to be business as usual. the president gave a speech at a previously scheduled gun safety event after the verdict, which obviously is somewhat ironic, what did what did he say there well, it was a fairly awkward conflict fluence of events today. president biden finding out about that verdict just before this preplanned event, where he was in this situation of a heralding a crackdown in gun violence i expect it to tout we knew that president biden was expected did two announce more than 500 new charges brought by the department of justice on gun crimes in the wake of his new bipartisan gun law that was passed and signed into law. in 2022. instead, the president took a broader approach. instead praising the new tools that prosecutors were given by that law, anderson per kilo joshua. thanks, joining us now to people who ve worked with and no prison biden wells and political commentators david axelrod and kate betting field, also with us retard federal judge johnny jones, the third and former federal prosecutor, jessica raw, third, judge. let me start with you. does the vert verdict surprise you d all know the verhaeghe didn t surprise me at all, anderson, i think the evidence was overwhelming and what i thought was notable and picking up one on your lead, which i thought was spot on in both of these cases, you had judges want to state judge and the other a federal judge saying, among other things, you must follow the law 224 americans in these two cases, you must follow the law, whether you agree with it or not, and you re not to be concerned about the sentence that i may give if the defendant is convicted, clearly, it validates our system of justice because they did exactly that. jessica, how about you? i mean, any surprise and what kind of grounds for appeal may there be? yeah. so i was not surprised by the verdict as the judge, the evidence really did seem to be overwhelming and the charges were pretty straightforward in terms of what the jury was being asked to find. but i think the k is also highlights the limited role that we give to juries in our system. now are there astro apply the law as they re instructed about the law to the facts and not to render an opinion in the courtroom about whether they think this was a wise prosecution or what they think is inappropriate punishment. i mean, they re really quite limited. it s not clear to me that there are strong grounds for appeal. i mean, there is a second amendment issue on whether or not the law that makes it a crime to possess a gun. if you are addicted to drugs, whether that survives a second i ve ever been challenged under the supreme court s current jurisprudence on that, but that would really only go to one of the three charges so it could be that there are some issues with respect to the evidence that was admitted, but that would be subject to harm plus error review maybe there s an appellate issue about whether or not he was entitled to essentially the benefit of the plea agreement that he had reached with the special counsel that previously fell apart, but i don t see those as being particularly strong in david. i mean, your sense of the verdict the impact it would have on the biden family and the white house. and i obviously on the campaign trail in the days ahead of any well yeah. look, i think that s the important question. anderson. a couple of weeks ago and trump was convicted, i said that i thought that the really important question was not how it would affect voters directly, but how it would affect him in his behavior. and we ve seen his behavior become even more pointed and angry since that conviction. here this is such a devastating experience for the biden family to have gone through this week to have their families go through this people get into trouble, they go, but not under the glare of the spotlight, like this. and to have your dearest relatives on the stand and have to go through this has to be devastating to the present. kate would know this even more intimately than me, but i know how much this must hurt him and there must be some feeling of guilt because he s the reason there s a spotlight on the family and why they re travails are so much in the news, so the question is, how does it affect him? he s got a debate in two weeks. he s dealing with multiple world issues right now and all the rigors of a campaign and how will he deal with it? i think is a big question. yeah. kate, we mentioned that the president promptly went to delaware to be with his son. and again, the contrast between other trump family approached the manhattan trial and how the biden family approach. this trial is stark. how do you think this is going to impact the president well, look, it is absolutely hard on him. he is a family man that you really cannot underestimate are under appreciate how close the biden family is, how much they lean on each other i think it would be hard for any father to go through, not only the experience of this trial, of course, but obviously all that hunter is dealt with and dealing with addiction and things have happened when he was in the grip of addiction. so yes, of course it is personally hard for the president, but i would also note he s somebody who has shouldered a lot of personal tragedy and difficulty while also juggling being in public office, he lost his son, beau to brain cancer when he was vice president. obviously his as you mentioned at the top has his first wife and baby daughter were killed in a car crash just weeks after he was elected to the senate. so he has spent his entire life in public service shouldering challenges, difficulty holding his family close, but simultaneously executing the duties of the office and being able to put to put his work first two. so i think his resilience, i think will really be the on display for people over the next few months. i think you saw a little bit today, frankly, when he was speaking at the gun safety event, he was lively. he was engaged, he was clearly talking with a lot of passion about the work he s done on gun safety and talking to the crowd. so i think i think the american people are going to see a lot of resilience for him. but of course this is hard for him. it s hard for him hi, are biden family, judge jones, what would you consider for a sentence on for these convictions? and also with the idea in mind that he is facing a tax charge as well that s potentially more worrisome for well, of course, the judge has to follow what are called the sentencing guidelines, which has my colleague knows are numbingly complicated, but the sentence needs to be sufficient, but not greater than necessary to fulfill the purposes of sentencing i think in this case because he didn t brandished the gun, he didn t commit a crime of violence was on another crime associated with to purchase it out. very frankly, anderson, over almost 20 years in the federal bench, i never had a stand alone case like this. this is really this actual charges and not something that s been brought tapped on. and this is the kind of zebra okay his, if you will. but i think in this case, there s a good argument for probation or it out with some kind of help remedial help counseling addiction treatment, and so forth. the real real peril comes with the tax charges because this counts as a conviction which it has the will in fact, enhance any sentence that he gets if he s convicted at the tax charges. so there s that s mandatory. that whatever the charges and this impacts that trump gets certain points for prior convictions and then of course that case is driven in part by the mount of the tax fraud as well, which escalates the sentencing exposure. that s where he really is in jeopardy of going to prison. i don t think this case so much. david, what do you say to republicans who were insisting tonight, the justice system as being weaponized against the foreign president, even though president biden s own son was just convicted in federal court and you ve got them menendez case and another congressman yeah, this is really complicated for them for that reason. and remember, yeah, you ve got senator menendez on trial, right now? congressman cuellar awaiting trial right now. it just puts the lie to the idea that there s this weaponized justice department of justice department has nothing to do with the manhattan da s office, but it s also a complicated for them because they have become so zealot zealous about the second amendment that they don t quite know how to talk about. this. so they re all shifting. and the thing that they re doing anderson is this whole, the mantra and they all move as one. is this biden crime family thing because really what s at play here is they re strategy is to try and say everybody is corrupt, that everybody is swimming in the same murky waters that donald trump is no different than joe biden. and that voters should discount the fact that donald trump is a convicted felon and has some other major cases pending against him. so i think you re going to see a lot of that. what congressman comer said today, chairman comer was really disgraceful as you pointed out he has been rolling out this cannon periodically. he lights the fuse and every time a flag comes out that says pop and there s nothing there. and so if they ve got evidence of a crime, maybe they should share it with people instead of just talking about it. and i think they don t because they don t in cape person biden and the foreign president and obviously have their first debate on cnn june 27th are you concerned about trump getting under the president s skin by invoking hunter biden. he obviously try to, when they debated in 2020 he tried in 2020 and it really backfired on him. i mean, i can tell you that the data that we saw on the biden campaign after that first debate where no trump really wound up and tried to come at hunter, was that what people remembered from that debate was joe biden defending his son, talking about his love for his son relating to people all across the country who ve had dealt with family members and friends who ve suffered from addiction. so it was actually a very relatable moment that really connected the joe biden as people across the country. so i think 44 joe biden, he should certainly expect that donald trump is going to come at him with this on the stage. we know that trump s going to try to throw everything he can it biden to get under his skin. but we ve also seen that this is a failing political argument. trump has tried to make it stick for five years. it hasn t and it ultimately winds up being an opportunity for people to see joe biden s humanity. and that s very moving and power david axelrod. thank you, judge jones. jessica roth, as welcome. have one form or another as part of the human condition, as are all kinds of things that sons and daughters do while struggling through addiction and the pain, all of it inflicts on families. being in the public eye are being the child of public figures. add still more complications my next gas patty davis knows this well. she is. of course the daughter of former president reagan and nancy reagan and a new york times op-ed, she writes this about the biden case. it might sound naive and the escaping le, partisan times, but it would be nice if the rest of us or even most of us but look at how sad this story is. how a man with a loving supportive family and every advantage and opportunity still fell into the roiling abyss of drug addiction and couldn t stop swimming around in this dark waters petty davis writes about her own experiences in dear mom and dad, a letter about family memory and the america we want to know thank you so much for being with us. you re just as it was so lovely and to your point in the op-ed, i mean, do you think basic humanity and empathy are possible in this hyper-partisan moment, the country is in well, i mean, on some days i think it s not possible some days i think it s extinct, but i think we have to keep looking for that and we have to keep reaching for it and i think even some of the comments from jurors expressed sympathy and compassion for hunter because this is at its root. this is not this story about a hunter biden is not a political story. i don t even think really at its right. it s a crime story even though he was convicted of some crimes but i think at its root it is a very sad story about addiction and a disastrous choices that addicts make and the ripple effects of those choices in families, lives and over time, i mean, obviously this is yes, it doesn t here s the thing about about an attic. when you, when you re addicted, your world is very insular. everything is about you and the substance that you re addicted two, that s that s kind of it, right and once you if you are fortunate enough to let go of that addiction and to stop using whatever substance it is, whether it s drugs or alcohol, you don t immediately change your mode of thinking. you don t immediately like break get out of that, that takes a lot of work and a lot of time and i am assuming that hunter biden is going through that. now. he starting to realize the extent that his addiction had on everybody else. i think it was very poignant for him. probably seeing his daughter testify in court, which has a really difficult thing to do you were candid about your own struggles with addiction in your teens and early 20s. the piece you wrote for the time, as you said, as the daughter of first governor and then no president, i do know what it s like to live under a glaring unforgiving spotlight than never dims the choices you make in your life. the mistakes, the stumbles are preserved forever and sometimes tossed out in front of you like a minefield, you have to keep crossing it s i mean, first of all, you re really a lovely writer. what kind of scrutiny to you in terms of what did that scrutiny due to you in terms of drug use, what was it like living under that kind of scrutiny? well my drug use wasn t made public. i mean, i have made a public because i ve talked about it since, but i basically i didn t get caught you know, i mean, i wrote about in his book how and my father was governor. i used to i used to drive at those so bored at site in sacramento on this summer s, i used to drive up to folsom prison because they hadn t gift shop how i found out that it keeps other calls from prison. i have no idea. it s not like a 70s. not like i go to google them, but i did and i used to like smoke a joint on the way going to force some prison completely stone, probably with other joints in my purse fortunately, they didn t search my purse, but a friend of mine when she read this story in my book said, well, were you worried that they would smell it on, you know, i never thought about that. so i never got clot. but, you the thing that follows me around, what is my activism in the 80s when my father was president in my sort of stridency and the anti-nuclear movement whenever i not whenever i read something about myself, but a lot of times, if i read something about myself, it s patty davis, the rebel daughter of president reagan, who protests protested his policies and everything. it was 40 years ago that is the reality of that political spotlight, which is the harshest spotlight imaginable and unfortunately, hunter biden is going to be followed by this for the rest of his days. it s just the way that s spotlight has a shelf life of like forever you know, especially now with cameron phones and laptops and social media and all of it, which obviously was involved in industry i mean, that was not around when you were right you were doing that? yeah. yeah. you referenced in your offset president biden ruling out a pardon for his son. you wrote i m quite sure it wasn t the answer. they re grieving. father wanted to give, but his sons actions and his sons illness forced him into a choice between the primal urge to protect a child and the public responsibility to uphold the law that is a terrible place to be. did you ever think when when your dad was present that did you ever worry about about it becoming known or as my drink? yeah. well, i owe well, as governor, i didn t think about it because i was, you know, just too strung out on drugs, i didn t think about it, frankly and by the time he was president, i had stopped doing drugs but i think like i was saying that that sort of self consumed mode of thinking, i think that was still very much my mode of thinking in the 80s when my father was elected president. and because if i ve been thinking more expansively, i think i would have expressed myself differently and not as stridently i think i d probably still would have spoken out about the anti-nuclear in the anti-nuclear movement because i believed in it very strongly but i would have done it differently but i didn t i you know what i mean? it was still that well, i m going just moments ago from a un commission finds israeli authorities and palestinian militant groups, including mass responsible for war crimes and other violations of international law. the commission has also found israel responsible for crimes against humanity during its military operations in gaza following the october 7 hamas attack. i want to bring in cnn s jumana karachi, who joins us live from london. thanks for being the un says it has evidenced at both israel and hamas have committed war crimes or report just handed down to mount. and what can you tell us? well, linda, this is a these are the findings of the un commission of inquiry on the palestinian territories and israel, this is a body that was set up by the united nations human rights council back in 2021 during the offensive in gaza at the time. and now for the past few months, they have been investigating the events of october 7 and events since they have released to reports, 200 pages long in total so with their findings on both what is happening in gaza during these military operations, as well as what took place in israel on october the seventh. and what they say here is that they have found hamas and six other palestinian armed groups it s responsible for war crimes committed in israel. and they also found that, as you mentioned, that they accused israel of committing war crimes and crimes against humanity during its military operations in gaza. now this linda, they say, is the first in-depth un investigation into the events of october 7 and events since they accused israel of obstructing their investigations, not giving them access to israel or palestinian territories, but they say that this investigation relied on interviews with victims and witnesses. they went through thousands of open source item is that they verified, they say through advanced forensic analysis, they had hundreds of submissions satellite imagery, forensic medical reports. now, when it comes to october the seventh, linda, these are the main findings. they say that these militant groups, hamas and these other groups are responsible for the for war crimes including intentionally directing attacks against civilians murder or willful killing, torture, taking hostages, including children and more. now, these crimes, they say, we re committed by these militant groups as well as palestinians. they say in some instances, in civilian clothing, they identify they say patron s indicative of sexual violence. and concluded that these are not isolated incidents, but perpetrated in similar ways in several locations primarily against israeli women. and the indiscriminate firing of thousands of projectiles against israeli towns and cities. they say that causing deaths and injuries is a violation of international humanitarian and human rights law. then you ve got the report on what is happening and what has happened in gaza during these military operations, there accusing israel of these war crimes and crimes against humanity, including you including using starvation as a method of warfare, murder, and willful killing intentionally directing attacks against civilians, sexual violence extermination, gender, persecution of palestinian men and boys, murder forcible transfer and the list goes on. what they say is when you look at the immense number of civilian casualties in gaza, the widespread destruction they say that this is the result of what they have found to be a strategy to cause maximum damage, disregarding the rules of war, the principles of distinction shin proportionality, an adequate precautions. and what they say is the intentional use of heavy weapons with a large destructive capacity in densely populated areas. they say that you know, all these evacuation orders that the israeli authorities have issued, that that was not adequate, that that was not enough. that they found that civilians as well came under attack when taking these evacuation routes or in designated safe areas and then they go into the humanitarian situation where they say they have found to be a total siege of gaza imposed by israel. and they say that this as what they found here to be the use of the weaponization of aid and access to gaza. saying that this was what is happening amounts to punishment. collective punishment against the civilian population and they also found instances they say a significant number of civilians who posed no threat intentionally killed by israeli forces. and in these cases, linda, we have to mention that they mentioned, they cite to reports that were reported by us at cnn over the past few months. now we have now reached out to the israeli government for comment. but it s worth mentioning here that they have made their position very clear on this commission. they said that they are not going to cooperate with them months ago. accusing this body of being an anti-israel and anti-semitic body, they have had issues with members of the commission. and of course, this is coming we ve seen the tensions rising, the relationship deteriorated between the united name nations and israel over the past during the conflict, as much as israel has come under criticism for its military operations in gaza, it has accused the united nations and several of its bodies and of an anti israel bias and not being fair towards israel. respect to the 25 years, i think it ll be at the lowest end of the sentencing range yeah. an array that just on that point, as you alluded to people at the bureau of alcohol, tobacco, firearms, and explosives, did apparently say that anyone else would have seen these these charges dropped with this case drop if he wasn t as well-known, just how unusual is it for someone we know criminal record to go to court for an offense like this it s very unusual. i saw some statistic that you ve talked about less than three to 5% of individuals in this situation would have ever had charges brought. and even if charges were brought most likely this was the kind of case they would have resulted in a plea deal, not the kind of case that would have occupied the time and resources that we saw the government put forth and you can t help again, but look at all of the personal and very embarrassing information that was revealed during this trial, it seemed like the trial was about embarrassing hunter biden and therefore embarrassing the entire biden family more so than seeking justice, i was quite surprised. i should say, at the outcome at the verdict by the jury, i thought there would be jury nullification. i thought the jury would look at this and say this just doesn t pass the smell test. there s something blatantly unfair about this prosecution but they looked at the facts and said they put aside of the reality that this was the president s son. and reach their conclusion. and like democrats have been saying throughout the day you have to accept the verdict the jury, and i m prepared to do that, but i was surprised by it of course hunter biden does face and other trial in september over his failure to pay his income taxes during a years-long crack alcohol spending binge. should that case b. of more concern to him? woke absolutely much much more serious case of very easy to prove cases where there are allegations of failure to pay federal income taxes the allegations here is that he failed to pay over $1 million over a three-year period. but i think we re going to see something happened in the tax evasion in case based on what we saw in the case that just resulted claiming that biden is slipping mentally while at the same time orchestrating that conspiracy set that aside. just consider the trump-world allegation that biden is behind this plot. two persecute the former president just so you understand this is all done by biden and his people maybe as people more importantly, democrats across the slide they ve crossed the line in which now the court system is a political weapon. this department of justice, the biden department of justice he is the most partisan department of justice in our nation s history today that same biden department of justice secured a conviction against the president s son, hunter, guilty on all three counts for lying about his drug use when he purchased a gun here is david weiss, the special counsel leading the case no one in this country is above the law. everyone must be accountable for their actions. i want to thank attorney general garland for providing the support necessary to fulfill our mission. that s why it s thanking the attorney general for ensuring that he has independence. the same attorney general that the former president and his allies have relentlessly accused without evidence of conspiring to get trump s today. some of those trump allies accused the biden administration of pursuing a conviction of hunter basically accusing the president of sacrificing his own son to continue that conspiracy. former trump white house adviser stephen miller posted this. take a look at this. the gun charges he says are a misdirection, don t be gasland. this is all about protecting joe biden don t be gaslight. indeed, new tonight, the new york times reports hunter biden s conviction not only undercuts trump s narrative, but also hurts his campaigns fundraising efforts, citing a person familiar, the time says, quote, there had been discussions about how much an acquittal of hunter biden would help mr. trump? potentially raising tens of millions of additional dollars as they plan to cite it as more evidence. the justice system was rigged oops it s an ai, democrats on the hill noted their response to the biden conviction was different. we re not here contesting the results. were not here trying to defund the fbi or the department of justice because we don t like the outcome of a of a given trial we respect the judicial process, which we respect the outcome of it for his part, president biden two, it says he accepts the outcome of the case, and we ll respect it. he issued that statement before he changed the schedule to be with his son, fleming fine. to wilmington, criminal defense attorney, liam donovan, former national republican senatorial campaign committee aid and karen funny a cnn legal commentator. brandy, i so let s let s jump right into this. republicans still saying that doj is a big weapon but against them, does that hold up anymore? let s listen to a speaker johnson. he was talking to our manu raju and other reporters about this verdict will talk about the other side every case is different. and clearly the evidence is overwhelming here. i don t think that s the case and the trump trials and all the charges that have been brought again, obviously brought for political purposes. hunter biden is a separate instance separate instance. the speaker say separate incidents, and so i think, look, this convictions certainly undercuts the theory that there are two there s a two tier justice system in reality, there s not one system for donald trump in one system for other folks in reality, we see that this conviction stands that when the government sets their sights on you, when they think that you ve committed a crime, they re gonna go after you and just like what happened here, a jury of your peers is going to listen, is going to figure out what happens. and here there was a guilty verdict yeah. and leon, the new york times, reporting that the trump campaign plan to raise millions of dollars off of 100 biden acquittal, i guess that s oh, well, i guess that s not gonna work out now what do you make of that? well, i mean, it s certainly makes sense if you re trying to play into the cynical idea that the system is rigged, that would certainly be prove it. i think well, with the punches though, if you start with that premise, then you can use that to any anything can come back and affirm that. so there s there s nothing that can prove the negative the system s not rigged, not a conviction of hunter biden. i mean, look, this would never should have gone to trial was supposed to be a plea deal. the plea deal fell apart. this also doesn t resolve because there s going to be a tax trial that comes up in september. it s just a mess. nobody s actually satisfied the president. but what do you sent through a tax trial to get help right? exactly what where does the conspiracy end? all the way up and then sanity begin? but here s this so cynical and discussing about that anybody who is dealt with addiction or it has people that they know deal with addiction it is a journey to stay clean, right? and the idea that the president would want to risk his child sobriety for the presidency. i get why in donald trump s mind that might make sense because that s how he thinks about things, right? is how do i work the angles to get the result i want, but the thought of joe biden doing that after again, i think what s important about today, i think about the contrast here you have a man who has this is a guy who has taken punches throughout his life. joe biden and he gets back up and he s resilient and he has figured out how to say, look, i love my son, but the law is the law versus trump, who acts like a spoiled brat, who just doesn t get his way yeah. i mean liam, the trump campaign saying in a statement, we put this up on screen. this trial has been nothing more than a distraction from the real crimes of the biden crime family and limb. people buy this stuff. i think there is a separate issue. i mean, truly if you look at this, this is kind of the it s the bragg case of the hunter charges. it really is small potatoes. i mean, i don t think republicans truly do believe there are other things that foot here they. haven t produced the goods though. they haven t been able to put together a case in the house of representatives that would that would be able to pursue this. i know that the oversight committee is tried, but there are big things that you re going to call the biden crime family. should you have are tied to the president, wears we re doing we re doing hot dogs later ron, those out. we ll look at for the nothing now, you know, that s why i think we are where we are. they talk a good game. they talk like there s going to be something else. but in reality, this is it. this is what they have. this is the case that they have and ultimately it s resulted in a conviction. yeah. and brandie, a juror ten, spoke to cnn about the decision all 12 jurors did agree that yes, he know and laying bought a gun when he was an attic or he was addicted to drugs yeah. i know everything gets thrown into the political meat grinder in dc. but again, this is further validation of the jury system that we have in this country. it s, it s not perfect. it s flawed. our justice system is why there s no doubt about that but in the trump case, you had a jury of men and women doing their job, doing their civic duty. they came to a verdict. they issued that verdict. same in this case, saving this point in new york one and delaware, you know, it s really important that we rely on the jury system. i mean, we call it a jury of your peers, whether it s actually your peers or not, it s 12 people who listen to the evidence and make get decision. one of the things that i think is so problematic here though, is that why is this? i mean, you shouldn t be able to lie on an application, but with respect to whether or not he was addicted, i mean, that just takes it another step and i think it s sad that he was struggling with addiction is sad ultimately that he said what he said on the application, but i do think that the jury system i m has 12 people decide what the evidence is and i listened to what the juror said the jury seem to say the fact that he s in the biden family had nothing to do with the case although in reality, everyone knew it was joe biden son and so even if it was in the back of their minds, they may have been at the front of their mind, but certainly it was something that everyone was aware of apparently it didn t, impact the verdict. this ties back to this larger theme about democracy that we ve been talking about, right? because there is a part of democracy that is a leap of faith. you have to have a leap of faith that you go into the system 12 people are going to listen to the evidence and make a decision and you abide by that decision, you have a right to appeal, you have a right, you write, you have plenty of rights, under house that hunter has that right there s rather, you know, exactly. and so but that s democracy that and when some of the commentary that we re seeing from republican let s the whole fact that the trump campaign initially put out a statement that had sympathy for hunter and then pull that back. i mean, all that does is undermine people s belief in our democracy and in our systems at a time when we actually should be reaffirming into your point, it s not perfect. there s so much work we need to do. but this is our system and we ve got to work with it. and by undermining it actually makes us less safe as a country tree. and the jury system works. i mean, at the end of the day and we re gonna for a long time, it worked and so regardless of how perfect it is, one way or the other, 12 people look at the evidence, they listen, sometimes say they get it wrong, sometimes they get it right, but the jury system works and leave just very quickly. there s a bob menendez trial going on henry cuellar trial going i mean, there are other trials of prominent democrats going on right now. i think the tricky part is and you re exactly right, but i think the tricky part is if you look at these piecemeal, you can say, well, this just proves the democrats are corrupt in this case of menendez or whomever. i think the tricky part is, as you say, i think there is trust in these institutions. but when we start to, when we start to talk about the supreme court, we start to talk about judge cannon and we pick apart things that maybe it looks like it s not on the level in other areas. i think it s hard to make these cases that we need to trust in the system if we re not bringing that across the board fair point, our guys, thank you very much. great discussion. i appreciate it tonight the bidens are huddling together in their delaware home to be with their son, hunter and addressing the verdict, the president said he could relate to families who have had loved ones battling addiction, saying quote, i am the president, but i am also a dad, jill, and i love our son and we are so proud of the man and he is today and chris whipple joins me now he s the author of the fight of his life inside joe biden s white house chris good to see you. i see you studied the bidens for a long time. how painful is this moment for the president yeah, i think it s extremely painful, just heart wrenching and it s impossible to overstate date just how close joe and hunter biden arnon it goes all the way back to that horrific car crash in 1972, which hunter and beau barely survived. it s the reason why we ve been seeing him holding him close through throughout the trial and jill biden has been there and why you see these continuing statements of support? i mean, i think that for joe biden, this is a personal tragedy at a political windfall because i think that politically, i just don t see any downside soup so many people, so many americans can relate to a father, loving and supporting his son why? and chris, we were talking about this new york times piece that s out this evening where the trump campaign has sort of analyze this various different ways of how a biden acquittal or conviction might play out. one of the things that says in that story is that the former president has been talking about hunter biden a whole lot less out on the campaign trail in part because the former president thinks that there s some sympathy out there for the current president because of what his son has been going through. and it is worth reminding our viewers just how much tragedy, personal tragedy, the president, the united states has endured over his life. and it has shaped him. it s made him the man he is. now. it s absolutely true and i think that look, i think a lot of the joe biden s advisers are keeping a close eye on him, not because they re worried about the political fallout as i say, i think that s nothing but upside, but i think they re just worried about him personally. they re worried about having to shoulder this on top of the burdens of the presidency. this is a guy who s got a lot of stuff on his plate but again, politically, i think there s no downside. i thought so even before the verdict and after the verdict, even more so because the guilty verdict gives the lie to the notion that joe biden is some kind of puppeteer who weaponized as the department of justice punishing his enemies it s and freeing his friends, obviously hundred biden never would have seen the inside of a courtroom if that were the case. and i think luck we ve got a debate coming up and i don t think joe biden, would ever go there. i don t think he ll bring it up but let me tell you if donald trump is makes the mistake of going there and spewing nonsense about the biden crime family. i think joe will be prepared. mean can you imagine if that happened? joe biden saying, look, last time i checked you were guilty of 34 felonies i m guilty of loving my son yeah. and chris, the president, has said that he will not pardon his son. what did you think of that? i thought it was extraordinary. i mean, it was it was a moment of just moral clarity on the part of joe biden and couldn t have been in starker contrast to the way donald trump has handled his own conviction so i think it was extraordinary when he was asked will you will you accept the verdict, whatever it is? he said? yes. would you and then again, what would you rule out a pardon? yes. you can t be much more clear than that. all right. for swivel a great discussion. thanks so much for your windsor, she is the person behind those secret recordings. lauren, great to see you again, we talked to you earlier this morning thanks for coming back on. walk us through this. i can first of all, why did you want to get these justices on tape? and was it tough when you walked up to them where they more reserved at first digit to warm them up. how did it work? well, so it went to two different dinners. there s one and 20231 and 2024, at the first one? i spoke with justice alito only there were several justices there, but we had a good conversation. i had gone initially because of propublica reporting on clarence thomas so i thought at the time, will he be there? will he not who knows, but the reporting is it s like one of his favorite dinners so i thought there was a good chance he was not there. harlan crow is not there to my knowledge but justice alito was and so i had a conversation with him about how do we repair this partisan rift in our country that s right. they didn t say partisan rather, sorry. how do we repair the polarization in this country at the time he responded really and newsworthy way it was. i don t know. i don t know. that s not really a role. so he didn t publish that audio. but then this was before he actually went under the glare of propublica is fantastic reporting, right and so i imagined that because of that he might be more aggrieved and i might have a second shot at that this year. and sure enough, when i asked him similar questions, he had a much different response. and let s talk about what he had to say. they re about pro public. i mean, it is odd to say the leaves to see a supreme court justice or hear a supreme court justice go after a news organization which by the way, for propublica did a perfectly legitimate series of new stories on what was going on at the supreme court. and it s raised all sorts of questions about the ethics there there have been calls for ethics, codes and so on, because of that, they ve wonderful is a private one that they did they did honestly, i have no idea what propublica is budget is, but let s just say that what is it 4 million that i think that clarence thomas is accepted in gifts from donors. i would, imagine that given that it s an independent newsroom, that the annual budget probably rivals the amount that clarence thomas is taken in donations that he hasn t reported. do i know for sure? i don t know. i just you know, if you re talking about millions of dollars there that you didn t report and justice alito is saying, oh, they ve spent a fortune on going after clarence thomas. let s look at that relative. were you surprised that he was as candid with you as he comes across and as mrs. alito comes across, i mean, what what surprised you the most? it was very surprised in my so just to give some more context to this, i spoke with justice alito at the cocktail reception before. that s nris spoke with mrs. alito after the dinner? and i was surprised with him because when i went, i honestly thought these justices, they have to exercise discretion all the time. and so it wasn t surprised the first year when it wasn t newsworthy. the second year i go back. okay. we ll try again and see if we get something newsworthy so as i m standing there and having this conversation with him, it s blowing my mind when he says there are fundamental things that can t be compromised. and so to me that s okay. well, wow what are those fundamental things that can t be compromised because it s clearly is going to affect how you rule on really critical decisions that are impacting the lives of americans every day yeah and i know you and i talked about this earlier this morning, but just in case the viewers have missed that, are watching now let s talk about tactics and the way you went about doing this when i was talking to you earlier this morning, you said spare me the pearl-clutching but what about the folks at home who might be saying, oh, you know what, she shouldn t have misrepresented who she was, she should just go in there and say, hey, i m i m doing this investigation, talk to me well, you know, if i were to walk up to someone and say, hi, i m a journalists, would you please tell me that you have a lack of impartiality. that s not something you re really going to be candid about. and it really goes to the genesis. i ve done undercover reporting for a long time back to a huge scoop that i had in 2014 with the koch brothers it s reserved for events or situations where you re not going to get information. really any other way. and in this particular circumstance, they re not forthcoming. there already evading any accountability measures whatsoever. and so is it worse for me too? tend to be a fan girl or is it worse for them to not disclose millions of dollars worth of gifts from gop donors let s talk about relative ethics violations here. i think that what i m doing is in service of knowledge for the public good, the greater good for all of us congress needs to take action this i shouldn t have to do this it should be congress and this should be the media holding these justice. justice is two accounts is say your public service as part of the problem, the supreme court is unaccountable course. it isn t accountable. they can get ethics reform passed you know, why are we having congressional hearings into this? i think any reasonable person would say that clarence thomas let s getting his mother s house paid for or his nephews tuition paid for or an rv loan, much of which was forgiven. all of these things, any federal agents have arrested eight nationals from tajikistan who were inside the united states over suspected ties to the terror group isis versus say they entered the us or the southern border. and is the largest concentration of isis fighters the world no journalist has been allowed in sayyed panoramas since 2021 until now. so the head of the prison has asked me to put on a head scarf what we walk through here because these are some of the most radicalized prisoners they have a senior us official told us the number one concern at pan panorama is a prison break the fear that was realized in 2022 when hundreds of inmates managed to escape and i look inside 25 men sit cross-legged in silence cell is spotless. the men we see appear to be indecent physical condition. but tuberculosis is rampant in the prison. and we are only allowed to look inside two cells versus your where are you from? a british man approaches the great, but does not want to show his face i know advocacy groups from about 13% to 9%. so look out of a cohort of 34 million or so, 17 to 24 year-olds we can only seem to generate 500,000 or so that are qualified and interested in serving. so this is, this is a matter i m deeply concerned about. it s not going to bite us today or tomorrow. but if these trends continue in their cultural there lifestyle trends, if they continue, we re going to find ourselves in a bad situation when it comes to the all voluntary force, 5810 years from now let me ask you about the political dimensions of this, because trump says he doesn t. this is not his idea, but he famously calls some american veterans who died in we re losers and suckers does trump s past comments about the military make recruiting more difficult i mean, can you imagine something like this happening in a second trump term after what he has said about fallen american heroes there are a number of things that have made recruiting difficult coming from both sides of the aisle, frankly, but i think it s the bigger issues in our country. i mean, the bottom line is that america s youth just are not familiar with americans military, with the one-half of 1% that serves and defense them. and that s the challenges we had to grow that with a close that knowledge gap among america s youth. so i think there are a number of ways to address that. measures that are far less radical than then reinstating a draft. things such as expanding j rotc and making sure that recruiters are guaranteed full access to high schools too. to simple things like bringing back physical fitness to high school students every day. and when they go to school and high school, things like that, they could really improve the pool of applicants. because right now, they just simply don t know that these are credible career fields and we don t want to go the way of mandatory service because what s really made the american military great since the draft was ended in 1973, was affected, they re all volunteers. they re professionals who want to serve. they want to be there. they want to do right by their country. and that s makes our military so capable and so great you and i were talking before the segment about various things and i asked about d-day. and, you know, my thoughts. i mean, there s still with those amazing veterans that we saw on june 6, last week. you know, these these men who and women who we are in their late 90s and 100s, just a stunning and just stirring example of bravery to americans all over the country have you been able to put your finger on what has been lost in and why? maybe americans just don t have the same reverence for military service that we have for the greatest generation for the people who fought on d-day know what i mean yeah, there are tremendous generation toughened by the depression of course. and then brought together by the spread of naziism. and of course imperial japan in world war ii they re just remarkable and they thought that war for four years and then came back home and went straight to work and raised families and built america into what she is today. but look i think that ember is still there in the hearts of america s youth. i see when i visit the academies, when i used to go to visit basic training or units out in the field, i think it s still there but again, they re a distance is grown between the american population and the military that serves them. and we have to bring them back together and we need our national leaders to go out there and talk about the virtues of military service, about what it means to help one another to serve one another. and i do think there is also a virtue and bring them, bringing the americans together from all democrats graphics from all ethnic groups, from all religious and racism, bringing them together that would go a long distance to helping bring our country together, make us more cohesive. as cohesive as the greatest generation was nearly 80 years ago now. yeah, and i should note, you and i both though after 911, we saw the same kind of patriotic response. inside this country. and so does somebody extent what chris miller is saying is that maybe we need to bring back mandatory service because that doesn t exist anymore. but if there were to be a national crisis, international crisis, i agree with you. i think americans, young americans would respond in the this woman said israeli forces killed both her sons in the raid. translator: i don t have anyone else but them. i only have them, she said. god is my witness. my son is 8 years old. the second one is 12 years old. children, what s their fault? we were shopping as normal, said this man. a little later we see helicopters, 20. they were close. after they were shooting down the whole place. they hit everybody, body parts, people, everything is gone. back in israel, this rare victory didn t heal the political fractures dividing the government. benny gantz, a former defense minister just announced his resignation from the war cabinet. he slammed netanyahu who he said was blocking israel from, quote, real victory, and he apologized to the remaining hostages families, saying the government had failed to bring them home. matt is joining us from jerusalem. matt, with all of these developments, what is the latest now on talks to try to free the rest of the hostages? hallie, despite initial optimism around the deal that it could be reached, those negotiations are still ongoing and secretary of state antony blinken is actually in the region this week traveling around and trying to shore up support for a deal. hallie? matt bradley. thank you. to our exclusive new reporting tonight about what s next after donald trump s criminal conviction, a meeting with a probation officer tomorrow. that s as mr. trump delivers a defiant message to crowds at his rally in las vegas today, his first since the guilty verdict came down. vaughn hilliard is there. reporter: tonight, former president trump turning the campaign trail into a defiance tour. vote for trump. we want a felon! reporter: on his first campaign swing since his guilty verdict since falsifying business records. the people are watching and they know a fake deal. reporter: speaking to a crowd of several thousand in 100-degree heat under the scorching las vegas sun, the former president s rally coming under the shade of legal setbacks. nbc news learned on monday the former president is scheduled with a virtual sitdown interview with a new york city probation officer, a key first step for his sentencing and potential jail time. the officer will evaluate trump s level of remorse, his financial background and mental state and provide a report to the judge to help him determine the sentence that he will hand down to trump on july 11th. they ve weaponized the department of justice like it s never happened in this country. trump publicly showing no regrets and over the last week he s repeatedly equivocated on whether he d seek revenge on his perceived political enemies. based on what they ve done i would have every right to go after them. it s a terrible, terrible path that they re leading us to and it s very possible that the it s going to have to happen to them. reporter: just this week, he called for the indictment of the members of congress, who worked on the january 6th select committee, and over the last year, he has called for the indictment of district attorney alvin bragg, who oversaw his new york prosecution. would you want him to seek retribution against those who brought these charges against them? of course. they should go to jail. if you re going to make false if i made false accusations, i d be thrown in jail in two seconds. he s not going to get angry. he s got too much to fix. he s not a vengeful person. vaughn joins us now from where that rally was. so vaughn, how does mr. trump plan to make his case to that probation officer tomorrow? reporter: right, hallie. we should expect the former president to hone in and focus on the fact that he has no prior criminal record. at the same time, he has also expressed no regret about any of hiss actions that he took that led to that conviction in the new york trial. hallie? thank you. to a state of emergency in wyoming for the most popular tourist spots. after a landslide wipe out a key road. that could mean a big setback for workers and headaches for tourists visiting yellowstone and the grand tetons. dana griffin reports. reporter: tonight, an emergency declaration after a mountain road near the popular jackson, wyoming tourist destination catastrophically failed. this site has moved really for decades. starting thursday it started moving a lot faster. drone video showing the massive chunk of the teton pass that plunged 70 piece down the mountain. this eight-inch crack started forming thursday. by friday an additional ten to 12 inches rapidly formed. overnight it slid all of the way down. complete failure. reporter: this road connects jackson to towns in east idaho. 10,000 vehicles pass through each day, including families who commute to work and school. i m anticipating that my two-hour commute just turned into a six-hour commute. reporter: tourism helps feed davidan s family. he warns the collapse will impact everyone from workers to tourists. if they don t come the economy crashes here. we have to have the tourists. if you are a tourist, prepare to pay more than you normally would. reporter: 40% of teton county s workforce comes from idaho to support popular tourist attractions like grand teton national park, yellowstone, and luxury resorts. could this take weeks, months before people can start accessing that road? i m hoping to do it definitely less than months. we know how important it is to the economy of jackson, especially now coming into the summer months. we ll get it done. reporter: crews working to revive a vital transportation pipeline destroyed by mother nature. dana griffin, nbc news. we are getting our first look at newly released bodycam video of a huge house explosion in suburban virginia. first responders running for their lives and desperately trying to get neighbors to safety. here s jesse kirsch. reporter: this was the moment an arlington, virginia home exploded. first responders fleeing. i m here! i m here! reporter: and evacuating residents. police department! i need you to evacuate and move down the street, okay? reporter: watch again from another angle. authorities say this armored police vehicle was about to smash in a covered window, but the blast came first. these videos, newly released by authorities show a december incident that investigators started with a homeowner firing more than 40 flares into the neighborhood, sparking a standoff between police and the suspect, who did not surrender. arlington county police! stop shooting the flares! mr. yu! reporter: authorities identified the suspect as 56-year-old james yu, described by neighbors as an erratic individual. there was no nexus to terrorism, and there is no continuing threat to this community. reporter: police say officers evacuated the duplex s neighboring unit, adding that the home s gas was shut off as the law enforcement response escalated. come to the front door with your hands up! reporter: police eventually breaching the front door, and then gunshots ring out. on this new hour of diamond, a key member of israel s core cabinet has resigned. what does this departure mean for netanyahu s war on gaza? also, tonight, extremism on the rise, hate group surge across america and why are migrant family still being separated at the u.s. border and being left in limbo. here with is live, let s do it. we began with an important seismic shakeup in the israeli government. benny gantz, one of the three core members of israel s war cabinet and vitamin netanyahu s top clinical rival has resigned. in a press conference today, he said, quote, netanyahu prevents us from moving forward to real victory and accused his far right coalition of prioritizing political considerations over war strategy. last month, gantz gave netanyahu an ultimatum, present a plan for the day after the war in gaza, by june 8th, or else. it was one of the most visible signs of division within the emergency wartime government, a team of political rivals who had until recently projected unity. but netanyahu has not produced a plan for gaza s future beyond rejecting a two state solution and insisting on israel s long- term security oversight over gaza and the west bank. so gantz followed through on his threat to step down, delayed by one day due to the brutal israeli attack to rescue hostages in gaza. today, netanyahu, for a second time, publicly urged gantz to stay, posting on x, quote, israel is in an x essential war on several fronts. benny, this is not the time to abandon a campaign. this is a time to join forces. with gantz s resignation, it will not merely think netanyahu s government but it does mean that he now needs the far right members of his coalition more than ever to stay in power. already, the national security minister highly controversial figure, ben-gvir, one of israel s most radical nationalists and is now demanding a seat in the war cabinet. he is saying he was the power of his party to be given expression and not as it has been until now. gantz was asked today whether his resignation leaves the israeli government without any adults in the room. here is what he said. i was very privileged together with my friends to bring to the cabinet room all the experience we have. i know that the other people, mainly off-balance and they know it should be done hopefully they will stick to what should be done, and it will be okay. this is the biggest shakeup to israel s leadership since october 7, and comes at a critical moment in the war. a comp room hostage deal is on the table right now. the world is waiting for a response from hamas, but it is not clear if israel will also accept the terms outlined by president biden. netanyahu says there are gaps between the proposal biden described and the one he approved, and even ministers like ben-gvir have rejected it. netanyahu will make his case for what he describes as israel s just war when he comes to speak before the u.s. congress. we must ask, will gantz s departure result in real fundamental change for the war in gaza? the problem does not lie singularly with netanyahu but with israel s ideological and institutional approach to the palestinian issue, largely speaking. the policies preventing, for example, palestinian statehood and liberation are deeply entrenched in israeli society and the resignation from one so- called moderate cabinet minister will not necessarily change that. joining me now to discuss this ambassador alan pincus, the formal israeli consul general in new york and chief of staff are four is really foreign ministers and eastern africa studies on the council of foreign relations. he is also the offer of the book, the end of ambition, america s past, present, and future in the middle east. gentlemen, it is great to have both of you with us. ambassador, i will start with you and get your take on this is recognition. does any gantz is recognition change anything about how israel conducts this war in gaza or these talks for a cease- fire and hostage deal? high, good evening. it looks like a drama. it looks like a political earthquake. it is not but it does have the potential to evolve and do something very dramatic if mr. gantz resignation. which is according to most of his critics was related by at least five or six days months. to a large extent, any guest in decision-making and the cabinet was marginal. his ability to affect change in both the prosecution of the war and in developing and crafting a strategy for postwar in gaza was marginal. he essentially became an enabler. i think if you read stephen cook s article on foreign- policy yesterday, even the americans got him wrong in terms of thinking he is some centrist, even left of center. in terms of policy, he is a decent man. there is no malice there. he meant well when he joined the government. it was a time of emergency. effectively, he enabled netanyahu. he is complacent and he is an accomplice to every mistake, every strategic fluid assumption that this government made. now, in terms of how this will affect the war, it doesn t change the fundamental element, the fundamental parameters of what needs to be done. israel still faces a binary choice, except the plan or not except the plan. it sounds bizarre, i m in, netanyahu rejects israel s plan. it is like, you know. 1994. george orwell except that it is netanyahu s 2024. so in that respect, nothing changes as a result of his departure. stephen, there is an interesting element in his press conference, i should say, a fact that came out and that is he is honestly calling for new elections in israel this fall but that was somewhat echoed by chuck schumer here a couple of weeks ago. senate leader chuck schumer, the highest making jewish official american history demanding that netanyahu step aside and calling for early elections, as well. first of all, do you see that happening? what are the chances that the next reiteration of the israeli government does not move further to the right, if you do bring in somebody like ben-gvir or give more power to the more right of netanyahu elements in the government and society. there is pressure coming from the outside for a new elections, and certainly from within, from benny gantz. the other major figure in the opposition. but netanyahu, even with gantz s decision to leave the government has a solid majority in the knesset so he can stick it out as long as he has the support of his partners, the radical right. think of a. this government is likely to move further to the right, as a result. however, it is true, any gantz has played essentially a marginal role. now that you have ben-gvir demanding on a greater say in the war effort, that is likely to move things to the right in ways that are not good for the palestinians, obviously, and the israelis, as well. gantz poss resignation is actually quite puzzling to me and ways. if he is concerned with national security and israel, if he is concerned about the war effort, it strikes me that he would want to remain in the war cabinet and insert himself rather than take himself out and let the country continue its march to the right. and who knows what will happen. ben-gvir and most of us want to resettle the gaza strip. that is an ultimate disaster so it may be that gantz thought he could save himself but fight for another day and improve his political chances. but it leads to a suboptimal outcome for everybody else. what does that mean, stephen, for the united states in the situation? you got the secretary of state, antony blinken now heading to the region for the eighth time since october 7th. they are on the cusp of waking up to an israeli government that is more extreme and, as you just said, potentially calling for the resettling, the full reoccupation of gaza and the displacement, perhaps, of the palestinians. if you do bring in people, or not bring in, but to give people like into mark ben-gvir more power over the conduct of this war and gaza policy. i was perhaps the least optimistic person in washington when it came to a cease-fire anyways. and i am even less optimistic about this. there is no basis for agreement at this point. unfortunately, it seems, after all this terrible bloodshed, that the conflict is not yet ripe for a resolution and secretary of state tony blinken is going to find the same problems that he found on his previous trips. ambassador, your thoughts on what america should do now? as you probably heard my previous hours, spoke to former u.s. army major who resigned saying that america actually does have a lot of leverage over israel. perhaps more so than any other country in the region. he needs to step up and exerted to change course. as a diplomat, former diplomat, i should say. what you think america should do now as it sees this israeli government, and even just consistently moved to the right and to the extreme right with no fundamental change in policy, vis-@-vis the palestinians? in president biden s credit, to president biden s credit. he warned mr. netanyahu, the government was informed that this is an extremist government and then when mr. netanyahu instigated a constitutional coup in january of 23, it was followed by biden not refraining from inviting him to washington, to the white house for nine full months, and then the war rocha, et cetera, et cetera. so yes, the u.s. has all kinds of levers that it can use. it chose, until now, not to use them. and i heard your interview with major, and you made actually, you presented, submitted two premises, and you are right on both. both has letters and chooses not to use them, and, to a large extent, most of its lovers, because mr. netanyahu has been entranced and defiant and is actually seeking confrontation with biden. his plan right now is to try and stall and waste time and wait until america is sucked into its election cycle, full force. around september. and then he hopes that mr. trump will be elected. there is no question and there is no doubt about that. what the u.s. needs to do now is one of two things. it needs to do its basic calculus of how much our american interests being sergeant here. and that pertains to a possible escalation in lebanon and direct feed, rather than what the palestinians or pull out, meaning, you know, say to mr. netanyahu, do what ever the hell you want, but leave us out. which is obviously not a reasonable or realistic option. but what they can do. i know we don t have time. the u.s. can do and has not done until now is for president biden, not anyone else, not secretary of state link in, not national security advisor sullivan. for biden himself, for the president himself to stand out, stand up, and make a speech differentiating, drawing a distinction, a clear distinction between israel and mr. netanyahu and calling mr. netanyahu s bluff, if he believes that is going to be a blow. i don t know. will have to wait and see if the president is watching this, maybe he will heed your advice. ambassador, i noticed very late in israel. thank you so much for staying up for us. i really appreciate it. we appreciate it. we greatly appreciated. stephen cook, great to see you, as well. my friend, congratulations on the book next up, why a man dressed up as an exterminator started a hateful conspiracy theory that is spreading like wildfire ahead of november s election, then later on, caitlin clark left off with team usa. was she snubbed? we could all unsubscribe and switch to xfinity. their connection is unreal. and we could all un-experience this whole session. okay, that s uncalled for. back in march, a man posing as a test exterminator arrived at a hotel in san diego that serves as a shelter for migrant families in an attempt to gain access. he was turned away. according to new york times report, just three days later, menacing calls began pouring into staff at the catholic charity s, the organization running the shelter. one voicemail left for the chief executive called him, quote, scum and not really christian. another woman in a message to a different staff member accused the nonprofit of flying emigrants all over the country, profiting from illegal operation. the false, baseless claim can be traced back to james o keefe, the guy disguised as the fake exterminator. he is the far right founder of project veritas, an extremist group that carries out these undercover operations to undermine and target progressive voters. turns out the keypad made posts on x thing the shelter was illegally holding and trafficking emigrants. in san diego, what began as online threats turned into threats in real life, when o keefe supporters started showing up at other catholic charities and sites. private armed guards were posted outside facilities across the city after people apparently prompted by o keefe s posts, came searching for, quote, smuggled children. volunteers were sent home, employees continue to work were told to keep a low profile or catholic charities founder, said, quote, we had never seen this level of harassment. this is just one story that disinformation campaign and conspiracy theories targeting catholic charities is part of a much larger story about the far right intensifying hostility and targeted threats across this country. it is one of the findings in a new report by the southern poverty law center, which found 835 active antigovernment groups and 595 active hate groups across the united states last year, together totaling 1430. in between 2022 and 2023, the number of white nationalist groups grew by more than 50% from 109 to a historic high of 165. and it is no coincidence that we are seeing all this happen right now. quote, extremists and those opposing inclusive democracy have used the past year to legitimize insurrection, paint hate as virtuous and transform false conspiracy theories into truth. all in preparation for one of the most significant elections in u.s. history. joining me now to discuss this is pete semi, professor of sociology at chapman university. and he is the co-author of out of hiding, extremist white supremacy and how it can be stopped. professor, it s great to have you on the program. let me start with your response to this idea laid out by the southern poverty law center report in 2023, it became clear that two years since the january 6th insurrection was a time of preparation for the hard right, and effectively we are going to see all this manifest within the next several months as we head into this critical election? first, thanks for having me on. i think it is right on target. what we saw after january 6th, 2021 was a period of time where you know, extremists kind of went into a short period of trying to regroup obviously the arrests and prosecutions had some substantial impacts on that world. but arrests and prosecutions aren t enough, and when you re not dealing with the root causes of the problem, these groups are able to kind of essentially regroup and then re- emerge even stronger. and i think that is exactly what we are seeing and what the southern poverty law center is pointing to. how does conspiracy theories play into the activity and rise of hate groups right now thinking about the harassment we saw play out at a migrant shelter in san diego. what led people to the january 6th insurrection, how is it that these baseless theories are resonating so much with people on the far right driving them to make these both online and real-life threats, even things like pizza gates that we saw several years ago? and menus, conspiracy theories are kind of a defining feature of extremist hate groups. one of the things that they do that is so important for them is that they offer a bridge of sorts and that conspiracy theories can reach a much broader audience. of course, we saw that on january 6th, in terms of the attack on the u.s. capitol. lots of different sorts of folks that ended up showing up by the thousands at the capitol that day. you had the proud boys, you had the three presenters. oath keepers, neo nazis, neo- confederate, a lot of folks that weren t necessarily affiliated with those groups. one thing they had in common is they all believed in this conspiracy theory about the stolen election. and you know, these kind of ideas are really, provide people a special sense that they are aware of things that the average person isn t aware of, and provides them with this kind of special knowledge, secretive knowledge, special insight. it really goes along with the idea, the that extremist groups offer to their adherents, that you re a part of a special population, special culture, special country, special race, special religion that is different and, quite frankly, superior to other groups. when you look at this record number of anti-lgbtq+ and white nationalist groups in 2023, numbering 186 and 165 respectively, why are these groups specifically, in your opinion, growing so significantly as they have grown? has there m.o. shifted and having this kind of hatred towards the lgbtq+ community? that is 18 many hot button issues that these kind of groups are good at identifying and then targeting and really spending a lot of time directing disinformation towards and propaganda and really trying to highlight the supposedly dangerous and risk a so that go along with, from their perspective, these hot button issues. immigration has been one for years, as well. and frankly, right now, they have at their fingertips, some of the most powerful technology in human history, in terms of social media platforms and the problems that you mentioned, the root problems that we are really not addressing, social media platforms, the lack of regulation around those. that will certainly be one of them coupled with national leadership that is helping essentially espouse some of the same ideas using literally, in the case of donald trump, the language of nazi germany to help promote these ideas. so they had these megaphones, whether it is national leaders or social media platforms at their disposal, that really empower them to a substantial extent. do you think that we have the adequate legal tools to take on these organizations x when you think about, as you were just mentioning, the issues of social media. it obviously rubs up against the issue of free speech in this country, that is always a find point when you re trying to go after these groups, he almost kind of have to wait until the free speech becomes actionable and they go out and carry out some kind of attack or potential violence. at which point it violates the law but up until the point of actually doing something about it, it falls, some would argue, under free speech. we have the legal tools the way that we have designated foreign terrorist organizations to go after isis and what have you? do we have enough adequate resources and tools to go after domestic terrorist organizations? i think we do have, i don t think a new statute is the answer, per se. i do think essentially utilizing resources that we have, being more aggressive, understanding that arresting and prosecuting is an important part of it, it is a necessary part of it but it is honestly not the only part of it. and then a civil issue, in terms of talk about the law. i do think that it needs some changes in that realm as it relates to social media platforms and being able to hold them more civilly accountable for the material that they are publishing and, of course, that means congressional changes to section 230. and i do think it is clear that social media platforms are not willing to take the kind of aggressive actions that are necessary to essentially cleanup their platforms. all right, professor pete sent me, it is a pleasure, thank you so much for joining us. i greatly appreciate your insights. thanks for having me. next, families are still being separated at the southern border. and why. and why. the best way to solve a problem is to keep it from happening. [sfx] ambient / laughing. last october, a peruvian family was taken into border patrol custody in the san diego area, during the process the parents were separated from their 18-month-old son, then released without him, according to a report from prison. if it wasn t for several military organizations that stepped in to help, that family may have never been reunited. they were able to track the boys whereabouts to a detention center hundreds of miles away, in texas. according to this february reporting from prison, legal advocates have accounted for at least 1000 instances of family separation across san diego county under this tactic known as street release, where migrants in custody are released without resources or shelter. at the start of his presidency, joe biden officially rescinded trumps zero-tolerance policy in the reunification task force that, according to dhs, has reunified 795 children with their parents, as of march. but despite those efforts, families are still being separated under a president who campaigned on a humane approach to immigration and strongly denounced the policies of his predecessor. now despite that, biden has signed an executive order this past week that drastically curtails humanitarian right to seek asylum. joining me now to discuss this, and more, is president and ceo of global refuge and a former policy director on the obama admin, and msnbc contributor who has done a lot of reporting on this and many other issues. it is great to have both of you with us. i will start with you, under a settlement reached in december with the families who were separated under the trump administration, border officials can still separate families in limited circumstances, such as if an adult poses a danger to a child or to national security. that didn t appear to be the case with the family that we just mentioned. to what do you oh these types of policies still taking place today? i think most people would be hearing about this now and still be shocked that this policy is still happening in this country? i think part of what we are seeing is a situation where policy does incentivize family separation. and that is true not just on u.s. soil but at the u.s.- mexico border, as well. when you think about even the new executive order, which exempts unaccompanied children, what that means is that a family that is fleeing for their lives, makes a possible choice of either allowing their children to travel unaccompanied across the border so that they can reach safety, or to remain in mexico obviously, families have experienced assault and far worse. in terms of the specific case that you are describing. i think this is where you know, there still some confusion on how policies are being implemented. we care for unaccompanied children and, obviously, it is horrific to see that even under this administration, we have echoes of what we saw as a real policy under president trump, which was essentially government sanctioned kidnapping. this report the site a difference between the family separations under trump versus biden, under trump federal immigration officials separated small children from their parents, whereas under biden, officials separated different family four nations, mainly parents and their adult children what does this say overall about our immigration system, specifically that these policies are continuing under a democratic president? is that just the result of vague policies and the lack of clarity as to how this should be implement it? or is it because there is something different at play here? i think what you re seeing is a biden administration that is falling into a political trap i do think we have to be very clear when we are talking about zero-tolerance, going back in history, that was such a dark chapter in our history, we had a trump administration that made decisions out of cruelty and made decisions out of the action of dehumanizing others. and here we have a biden administration that is falling into a political trap. over the last four years we have seen this admin that has made promises and that suddenly, it is shifting to the right. as you pointed out, ayman. i want to remember that the very very last week of the 2020 november election, the biden campaign released a video call separated. and in that video, just five days before everyone went out to vote, he specifically highlighted trumps zero policy initiative. he highlighted the cruelty. in here we are, just five months before the election, and as we have been discussing, he has been starting to sound and use language that does sort of remind us of donald trump. and at the end of the day, that is a political trap because the bottom line is, you cannot out trump trump when it comes to immigration and the border. what worked in 2020 was that humanity, as you described, anything that tries to shift to the right of donald trump is a failed political strategy. so to that point, krisher. makes a really good point with this flaming framing of a political trial when it comes to the issue of immigration. i do want to turn to biden s new executive order. any any time the seven day average of a legal border crossings reaches 2500 migrant entering the u.s. between legal ports of entry, with some exceptions, will be banned from claiming asylum and deported talk to me about how this is implemented. several department of homeland security officials responsible for carrying out the actions. on the condition of anonymity to msnbc, there is concern that the tension facilities across centers for migrants could quickly become overcrowded. what are you hearing about this and why? it is such an important question because for organizations like local refuge who work with asylum-seekers, the executive order raises a number of concerns. for one, there are very significant questions about its ultimate legality and enforceability. you know, the trump administration used the same authority to shut down the southern border and that was also really locked by federal courts. also raises some serious locations for asylum seeking families who are trying to seek protection because of these arbitrary numerical limits. i think the final important point is just understand that we know from trump era policies that were hard-line restrictions. they don t actually deter people from crossing the border. so we are perplexed by a policy that isn t going to actually be effective, that is harkening back to the trump administration, and i think it is a result of congressional inaction. but the administration could put in place a system that respects our border, but also respect our humanitarian and legal obligations. back in april, reported on how migrant women are being targeted by cartels as they wait and limbo at the mexican border to hear back about their asylum claims. i remember talking to you about it back then. how do you see biden s new order exacerbating this specific issue? densely popular to palestinian neighborhoods, some of them are tours chanted death to arabs and may your village burn and other racist and violent slogans. the most troubling things were attacks on journalists. these are palestinian journalists, clad in a press pass, being threatened and physically attacked by a mob right wing israelis. he was kicked and pummeled by the mob, had objects thrown at him and sustained a head injury. even more troubling, it was the journalist who was detained by police, who confiscated his equipment after he was attacked. i known right-wing activists contacted the police and claimed that he was a hamas operative. that is all the evidence the police needed to detain him. also reported that the police did not arrest any of the at at attackers. intimidation from the palestinian sections of jerusalem not new. this mart has been and will for decades. we re not just dealing with outlaws or a fringe group this is appearing at the core of israel s power structure. take for example, national security administer, ben-gvir. here that this week s march and visited the complex that palestinians referred to, israelis called the temple mount. israeli start with charles barkley and other male commentators who accused the wnba layers of being jealous of clark s popularity, the carter foul seems to have supercharged that view. what do you think that type of criticism gets wrong about how veterans are treating clark? well, one, thanks for having me on. one, i think a lot of them and who are commenting, they seem to come at the same time, forget about how they competed if they were former players in the way that charles barkley was , forget about how they commentate and frame a lot of the story lines that happen on the men s side, whereas when men challenge each other, when a new rookie comes in and there is some kind of. were, of course, you have want to see how misses person really who they say they are, it is often considered a competitive and natural part of the game. yet, with women, they seem to reduce their level of competitiveness to something that is very triggering, particularly when we are talking about a leak that a 70% black. they go with these code words, petty, jealousy. making it sound like we re talking about a real housewives reunion on bravo. this is not what this is, this is a competitive fire. and naturally, of course, when you are the talent, the generational talent that caitlin clark is, there s going to be a lot when you come to the next level. the women in the wnba are the escalators of the world at their sport. it is a reason why the olympic team has won seven gold medals in a row. it is a reason why they are 70 and three and they haven t lost a game since the 90s. where did the thing is women were coming from? this leak. if they re that good that would me naturally for any rookie, there s going to be a bit of a learning curve where they can understand the physicality and the way the game is played. it is very natural in men s sports when you go from college to the pros, that in college, you can t get away with in the pros. that is what makes it the pros. but the men who commentate seem to forget all of this when it comes to caitlin clark. you bring up an interesting point. i do want to ask you about that. there has been an obvious racial component to some of these debates. carter and angel rees, who were seen cheering after the foul are both black. and people are talking about that and explained that point how does race play into the media s explosive reactions to the story lines? will this is a collocated question, and a complicated answer. so let me go back and sum it up correctly. okay, again, the wnba is 70% black. so the face of the caitlin, they made out to be black. one of the tropes, and many of the tropes about the black women is that there confrontational, aggressive, petty, jealous, all the things. so when those traits are ascribed to women in general, when people want to talk competitively about women. i think, in this case, particularly sticks because you have that object of black versus white. let s be honest, another white player had done, it would not merely have been as inclusive as it was. because you have the dynamic of her and angel rees, a black player and a white layer having a personal rivalry, it becomes racially charged by the optics. i m old enough to remember when johnson, when they were college rivals came over to the pros. a lot of what people talked about then, how their talents are characterized was based off racial perceptions in this country of both of them. i don t know why people think that this wouldn t be alive and well in this rivalry, but it is. and angel rees has bore the brunt of a lot of this because she chose to, you know, sorta be confident about the level of play that she has when they were in college. and listen, i don t agree that she should have been clapping when kennedy carter took her down but at the same time, within the context of a broader rivalry. they took some cheap shots at each other, that s what happened. again, it is interesting how the same things that are celebrated, marketed, and that fans love on one side of the game, a totally different gender, they are suddenly clutching their pearls on the other side. i grew up a little bit in detroit. i know very well what a violent or tough basketball game looks like. but to ask you about something you brought up really quick. we are almost out of time, though. the debate that was parked this weekend about caitlin clark being left off the u.s. olympic rascal team. some describe it as a snub. she is still a rookie, though. she s a two-time nieces mentor winner. has not included the standout rookie before or any rookie is before, what is your reaction and do you agree with calling it a snub? i don t think it is a snub and i honestly wasn t surprised. i thought this months ago. i think she is going to have a pretty hard time making the team. and that is not about her ability. i think eventually caitlin clark, i think this is almost a guarantee. about the transition, she went from playing college ball to play in a professional league within a matter of weeks, when they were holding the child in their camp, she wasn t able to play in any of that. she has some international experience but not a lot. she is at a position where it is a little bit tougher because you are a guard a little bit on the slight side. she is adjusting to the physicality where the international level is more. it is a very successful team there is a lot of people that do not get on this team and work this time around. and so i think if we just take the caitlin clark nests away from it and people will probably better understand the decision. like you said, the women s team is the most dominant team in the sports. it is tough to break into at any level, let alone your rookie year. thank you so much, greatly
