دنیا میں اگر کوئی مثالی ملک ہے تو شاید جاپان اور اگر کہیں مثالی لوگ ہیں تو جاپانی جو کبھی ’’شوگنز‘‘ اور ’’سمو رائے‘‘ ہوتے تھے اور آج بغیر کسی جنگ کے فاتح ترین لوگ ہیں۔ اسی طرح مجھے سکینڈے نیوینز کی بھی کبھی سمجھ نہیں آئی جو کبھی کرئہ ارض کے وحشی ترین لوگ تھے۔ تاتاری بیچارے تو یونہی بدنام ہیں ورنہ سکینڈے نیوینز تو صرف زمین پر ہی نہیں، سمندروں میں بھی وحشت و بربریت کی انتہائوں پر تھے لیکن آج ان سے زیادہ مہذب کوئی نہیں کہ دنیا بھر میں ویلفیئر سٹیٹس بھی یہی ہیں۔عظمت و رفعت نام ہے رویوں کا۔ پدرم سلطان بود، اچھل کود اور خالی خولی بڑھکوں سے بڑائی نصیب ہوتی تو انہی صفات کے حامل سرخیل ہوتے۔ روزنامہ جنگ 30جولائی 2021کی ایک دو کالمی خبر کی صرف دو سرخیوں پر غور کریں تو بہت کچھ سمجھ آسکتا ہے کہ ہم کیسے ہیں اور کدھر جا رہے ہیں؟’’7خود کشیاں: لاہور میں نوجوان پھندے سے جھول گیا‘‘’’عظیم اور فوزیہ نے زہر کھا لیا۔ طلحہ نے پھندا لے لیا، نوید نے گولی مار لی، راحیل نہر میں کود گیا‘‘’’ہم زندہ قوم ہیں‘‘ اور اسی لئے میں عرصہ دراز سے انسان سازی کو مرکزی مسئلہ قرار دے رہا ہوں اور مجھے یقین ہے کہ اس ملک کے کرتے دھرتے نہ یہ بات سمجھیں گے، نہ اس پر توجہ دیں گے اس لئے دوبارہ ان جاپانیوں کی طرف چلتے ہیں جو کبھی خود کشیوں کے چیمپئن سمجھے جاتے تھے اور ’’ہارا کیری‘‘ ان کے کلچر کا حصہ تھی۔ پھر کیا ہوا؟ وجوہات جو بھی ہوں، حقیقت یہ ہے کہ دوسری جنگ عظیم نے جاپانیوں کو بدترین شکست اور ذلت سے دوچار کیا تو ماتم کرنے اور جذباتی ہونے کے بجائے انہوں نے اپنے رویوں پر نظرثانی کرتے ہوئے دنیا کو ہتھیاروں کی بجائے اوزاروں سے فتح کرنے کا فیصلہ کیا اور اِس عظیم فیصلہ پر چند عشروں میں عمل بھی کر دکھایا۔ اصولاً تو جاپانیوں کے دلوں میں امریکنوں کے خلاف نفرت کے آتش فشاں دہکنے چاہئیں تھے لیکن حیرت انگیز طور پر جاپانیوں نے ان سے سیکھنے کا فیصلہ کیا۔ 1949ء میں جاپان نے اپنے ہاں صنعتی سیمینار کا اہتمام کیا تو امریکہ سے DR DEMINGکو خصوصی طور پر دعوت دی تو ڈاکٹر ڈیمنگ نے اپنے طویل لیکچر میں جاپانیوں کے سامنے اعلیٰ ترین صنعتی پیداوار کیلئے ایک اچھوتا نظریہ پیش کیا یعنی ’’کوالٹی کنٹرول کا نظریہ‘‘۔ جاپانیوں نے اس نظریہ کو ’’عقیدہ‘‘ بنا کر اپنا لیا۔ انہوں نے اپنے پورے صنعتی نظام کو پوری قوت اور دیانت کے ساتھ اس نظریہ کے ساتھ ہم آہنگ کر دیا اور ’’زیرو ڈیفیکٹ‘‘ کو اپنا ٹارگٹ بنا لیا یعنی ایسی مصنوعات مارکیٹ میں لانا جن میں کوئی نقص نہ ہو۔ جلد ہی جاپانیوں کے کارخانوں میں نقائص سے پاک سامان تیار ہونے لگا اور دیکھتے ہی دیکھتے وہ وقت آ گیا کہ برطانیہ جیسے ملک کے دکاندار بھی یہ کہنے پر مجبور ہو گئے کہ اگر ہم جاپان سے لاکھوں کی تعداد میں بھی کوئی پراڈکٹ امپورٹ کریں تو ہمیں سو فیصد یقین ہوتا ہے کہ ایک چیز میں بھی کوئی نقص نہیں ہو گا۔ نوبت یہاں تک پہنچی کہ جاپانی جو صحیح معنوں میں ’’زندہ قوم‘‘ تھے، اپنے فاتح امریکہ پر بھی چھا گئے۔ امریکی ہفت روز ’’ٹائم‘‘ 4؍جولائی 1988ء کی کور سٹوری جاپان سے متعلق تھی جس کا عنوان تھا۔"SUPER JAPAN: CAN AN ECONOMIC GIANT BECOME A GLOBAL POWER?"جاپان کی جگہ ’’پاکستان‘‘ کیوں نہیں؟ لیکن اس کیلئے کھوکھلا جوش نہیں ہوش چاہئے۔ پاکستان کو ’’خدائی فوجداری‘‘ اور اپنی ’’مخصوص ٹھیکے داری‘‘ اور دیگر رویوں پر نظرثانی کرنا ہو گی۔ میں یقین سے کہہ سکتا ہوں کہ ہم آج تک اپنی سمت اور ہدف کا تعین ہی نہیں کر سکے۔ دوسری جنگ عظیم تک اسی جاپان کا یہ حال تھا کہ جس پراڈکٹ پر ’’میڈ ان جاپان‘‘ لکھا ہوتا، اسے گھٹیا پن کا سمبل سمجھا جاتا۔ مغربی ملکوں کے تاجر ’’میڈ ان جاپان‘‘ سامان دکان پر رکھنا اپنی توہین سمجھتے تھے تو پھر ’’شکست‘‘ کے چند عشروں بعد ہی ایسی ’’فتح‘‘ کیسے ممکن ہوئی کہ خود امریکہ کی سڑکوں پر جاپانی کاریں کثرت میں دکھائی دینے لگیں؟آخر پہ ٹین ایج کا ایک ذاتی واقعہ۔ میرے والد مورس، فوکسی اور اوپل جیسی گاڑیاں رکھتے۔ رئوسا اس دور میں شیورلیٹ، کیڈلک، بیوک جیسی بڑی بڑی امریکن گاڑیاں خریدتے۔ جاپانی گاڑیاں نئی نئی آئیں تو والد صاحب نے سستی اور قسطوں والی دیکھ کر خرید لی۔ ہم سب کو لاد کر پھپھو کلثوم کی طرف انہیں دکھانے گئے جنہیں وہ ’’آپا جی‘‘ کہتے اور کبھی پشت ان کی طرف نہ کرتے۔ پھپھو کلثوم پارٹیشن سے پہلے کنیرڈ کی پڑھی ہوئی بہت رعب داب والی خاتون تھیں۔ والد دو بہنوں کے اکلوتے بھائی اور ان کے بہت لاڈلے تھے۔ پیار کیا، دعائیں دیں، بچوں کو چوما لیکن جب برآمدے کے ساتھ کھڑی ٹیوٹا دیکھی تو موڈ آف ہو گیا، بولیں ’’بیبا! تیری تے مت ماری گئی۔ جاپانیاں نوں کی پتہ گڈی کی ہندی اے‘‘. واپسی پر والد گم سم بڑبڑاتے رہے ’’آپا جی ٹھیک ای کہندے نیں جاپانیاں نوں کی پتہ گڈی کی ہندی اے‘‘۔زندہ قومیں ’’کہنے‘‘ سے نہیں ’’کرنے‘‘ سے زندہ ہوتی ہیں۔ زندہ ہیں یہی بات بڑی بات ہے پیارے۔

On Sunday, I went to South Boston to celebrate the dedication of St. Monica's Community Hall to Ed and Jean Shiflett. Unfortunately, Ed was in the hospital and was unable to be there, but we unveiled the plaque with Jean and the pastor, Father Peter DeFazio. I gave them rosaries from the Holy Father.
Jean and her husband have been volunteers in the parish for over 50 years, particularly working with outreach to those in need. They have worked very hard in the distribution of food and the many other wonderful programs that are carried out at St. Monica's.
