STAYING IN BUSINESS WITH GOVT AID

SURVIVE the Covid-19 pandemic – this is the main concern of industries big and small.
At a time when business is slow and the need to comply with strict SOPs has stifled operations, staying afloat is all that matters.
To do so, businesses count on the Government and its many incentives and assistance plans to tide over these challenging times.
The latest National People’s Well-Being and Economic Recovery Package (Pemulih) worth RM150bil announced on June 15 is to help people and businesses through Phases Two, Three and Four of the National Recovery Plan.
(The country will move on to Phase Two of the National Recovery Plan when three indicators are met: the number of daily Covid-19 cases drops to below 4,000; the rate of bed usage in hospital intensive care units is at a moderate level; and 10% of the population have received two doses of the vaccine.)

High time to review essential sectors list, govt urged

PETALING JAYA: With Phase One of the National Recovery Plan still in force, businesses want the government to recalibrate the list of essential services and industries to include their supply and export businesses. They also urged the introduction of automatic moratoriums, rental waivers and relief, tax exemptions and the ramping up of vaccination programmes for industries.
Federation of Manufacturers Malaysia president Tan Sri Soh Thian Lai
(pic) said even the bigger firms were struggling to survive.
He said the list of essential economic and services sectors approved to operate must include an en bloc approval of the entire supply chain, with an increase in workforce capacity to 80%.

Groups want more sectors to open up, govt says not just yet

Calling for caution: Fadillah said that although the views of industry players are being heard, the ministry has to abide by the decision made by the NSC.

PETALING JAYA: While essential industries are allowed to operate, “non-essential” industries in the same supply chain that feed into them or from them are asking for the same leeway.
Their rationale, supported by the essential industries, is that there is a need to procure goods to allow the companies permitted to operate to function, as disruptions in getting raw materials and semi-furnished goods can spell trouble for even the essential industry companies.

GEORGE TOWN, May 25 — Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow has called on everyone in Penang to practise “self lockdown” as the state continues to record a high number of Covid-19 cases.
He said the manufacturing sector in Penang has the highest number of clusters with two new ones recorded yesterday.
“Even though the R-naught (R-t) for Penang as of May 23 is the lowest in the country at 1.06, the number of cases since last week has remained high,” he said in a statement issued today.

Industry players voice support for govt's move

Federation of Manufacturers Malaysia (FMM) president Tan Sri Soh Thian Lai.
PETALING JAYA: Industry players have voiced their support for the government’s intention to tighten the standard operating procedure for high-risk sectors under the extension of the current movement control order.
The extension is necessary to reduce the number of Covid-19 cases as new infections are still alarmingly high, said Federation of Manufacturers Malaysia (FMM) president Tan Sri Soh Thian Lai.
“The industry is cognisant of the overall clusters that have been reported lately, including those from the manufacturing sector.
“This is indeed very concerning but at the same time must be recognised that most of the clusters involving the manufacturing sector have stemmed from the targeted screening of foreign workers and not as a result of infections that have occurred directly at the workplace, ” he said.
