An ex-International footballer and coach, Emmanuel Amunike, tells TOFARATI IGE about his career, family and other issues
When
was the first time you knew you wanted to become a footballer?
I have always had passion for football. As a kid, while playing on the street and in school with my friends, I started nursing the desire of playing football professionally. After I was privileged to watch the Nigeria national team playing, I started having the ambition of playing for Nigeria. But, where I come from, the environment was not conducive for one to combine football and education.

Tell us about your childhood and growing up days.
I was born on March 5, 1938 to the Omodeleola dynasty in Modakeke, Osun State and I grew up in the same environment. Because of my family’s situation and other circumstances, I did not start school until I was 10 in 1948. I left primary school in 1954.
Because I was a very brilliant student, our headmaster at St. Stephen’s School, Modakeke, employed me and some other classmates to teach in that same school and I was there till 1956 before I went for my Teachers Grade 3 Course at St. Peter’s College, Ilesha from 1957 to 1958. After the Grade 3 Teachers Course, I went back to St. Stephen’s School, Modakeke to teach. The system then was that after Grade 3, you had to teach for two years before you could advance to Grade 2.  After teaching for two years at St. Stephen’s School, Modakeke, I sought admission to St. Luke’s College, Ibadan and I studied for another two years there. When I finished from St. Luke’s College, I came back to teach but this time, I worked for only one year before I went for my Grade 1 Course in Akure, Ondo State. That ended in 1964 and all the time, I was playing football in all the places where I worked.

Nicknamed the ‘Dean of Defence’, Shofoluwe was part of the first Nigerian squad to feature at Fifa-organised championship – at the 1983 U20 World Cup in Mexico. There, Christopher Udemezue's Flying Eagles crashed out in the first round following defeats to Brazil and then Soviet Union in Group D.
That same year, he won his first senior cap as the Super Eagles triumphed 4-3 over Morocco in a 1984 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against in Benin City, which ended goalless.
