The assassination of the Rosselli brothers

On the 9th of June 1937, in the French spa town of Bagnoles-de-l'Orne, the Rosselli brothers, Carlo and Nello, were savagely murdered by right-wing thugs. The perpetrators were members of the far-right French clandestine group La Cagoule. The act was sanctioned by the Italian Fascist government in exchange for, “one hundred semi-automatic Berretta rifles.” Carlo Rosselli was the epitome of the resistance; he was the “enfant terrible” of anti-fascist expatriates. This essay will briefly summarize their ideology and actions, and highlight what led up to their assassinations and its aftermath.

The pathetically weak remnants have been marking the centenary of the Partito Comunista. Toby Abse reports from Livorno
January 21 2021 marked the centenary of the foundation of the Italian Communist Party, or, to be more exact, of the
Partito Comunista d’Italia (PCd’I: Communist Party of Italy) - it only became known as the
Partito Comunista Italiano (PCI) in 1943, the year in which Stalin wound up the Comintern.
The centenary was given relatively wide coverage in the Italian media, with television documentaries and radio dramatisations, as well as many newspaper and magazine articles. Moreover, a fair number of books were either published or reprinted to mark the occasion. However, the continuing Covid-19 pandemic obviously imposed very severe limits on attempts to celebrate it in physical locations, as opposed to websites, Facebook pages or Zoom meetings.

25 years ago: Arafat wins Palestinian vote
On January 20, 1996, PLO Chairman Yasser Arafat and his al-Fatah party won the election held among residents of the West Bank, the Gaza Strip, and East Jerusalem. The electoral triumph confirmed Arafat’s role as the chief enforcer of Israeli dictates in the territories occupied by Israel since the 1967 Arab-Israeli war. Arafat won 88 percent of the vote for president of the Palestinian Council while his nominees took more than half the seats on the legislative body.

Turnout was heavy except in areas, mainly East Jerusalem and Hebron, where Israeli security measures kept Arab voters away from the polls. Most Arab residents of East Jerusalem, which the state of Israel had formally annexed, were required to travel to polling stations in the West Bank if they wished to vote. In Hebron, Israeli troops and heavily armed Zionist settlers blocked access to the polls through road blockades. The fundamentalist Hamas group, which opposed the Israeli-PLO accord under which the Palestinian Authority was established, called for a boycott but made no attempt to disrupt the vote.
