On Wednesday, the Lok Sabha approved the Telecommunications Bill, 2023, granting the government the authority to temporarily manage telecom services for national security reasons. The bill, facilitated by Communications Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, also permits the government to seize control of a telecom network during public emergencies or for public safety. Passed by a voice vote after a brief debate, the bill, which allows for stopping transmission and intercepting messages in specific situations, aims to promote structural reforms in the telecom sector, according to Vaishnaw.
The bill allows the government to temporarily take control of telecom services in the interest of national security.
The Telecommunications Bill, 2023, which was passed by a voice vote after a short debate, also allows the Centre to take possession of a telecom network in case of any public emergency or in the interest of public safety.
