Get vaccinated in your bathing suit? At a Heat playoff game? Florida's not missing a shot

May 28—In the race to vaccinate as many Americans as possible, it has come to this: You can now get a COVID-19 shot while wearing your Speedo. The vax packs aren't missing the opportunity to entice the throngs, some of whom may even be in thongs, who will gather for Memorial Day events this weekend. Hollywood Beach, for instance, opened a COVID-19 walk-up vaccination site at Charnow Park on ...

Florida-run COVID testing sites closing at the end of May. Where can you go next?

Florida-run COVID testing sites closing at the end of May. Where can you go next?
Michelle Marchante, The Miami Herald
May 20—All state-run testing sites in Florida will close by the end of May — including the sites at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens and C.B. Smith Park in Pembroke Pines.
The sites will close by May 28, according to the schedule posted on the Florida Division of Emergency Management website. State-run testing sites in Manatee and Sarasota counties have already shut down.
Among the reasons why the test sites are closing: The division is shifting its resources to focus on vaccinations and to prepare for hurricane season, said Mike Jachles, the chairman of the Florida Association of Public Information Officers. He has helped the state with some of its testing and vaccination operations at Hard Rock Stadium and Miami Dade College North campus.

With the Johnson & Johnson vaccine paused, starting Tuesday, all-state run FEMA-funded sites will resume giving first doses of the Pfizer vaccine.
“It’s for anyone 16 and up with no appointment. So it is a very easy process to get that vaccine,” said Mike Jachles with the Florida Association of Public Information Officers.
A reminder, those that are 16 and 17 years olds are eligible to receive a Pfizer shot but must have a parent or guardian present.
Miami-Dade’s North Campus will be administering first doses of the Pfizer vaccine starting at 7 a.m. on Tuesday.

Florida COVID-19 vaccines, cases, deaths: Live updates for April 6

Residents as young as 16 can get COVID-19 vaccine at Regency site
The Regency Square mall site is scheduled to begin vaccinating Florida residents as young as 16 by Monday (April 5), marking the start of a new front in Northeast Florida's battle against the coronavirus pandemic.
The move forms one part of the vaccine expansion announced in late March under Gov. Ron DeSantis. On March 25, following multiple days of vaccination numbers that fell well below available supply, the governor reduced the age cutoff for vaccination to 40 for that week, with a further drop to age 18 to take effect on April 5.
That initially left some confusion about the eligibility of those age 16 and 17. However, starting Monday, residents age 16 and 17 are now confirmed eligible to start receiving COVID-19 vaccinations, and on Friday, Regency was officially announced among the sites providing those vaccinations for older teenagers. | Read more

Vaccination Sites Expect Large Crowds as Several Changes Go Into Effect Monday

Jachels says the campus site switches over to the Johnson and Johnson vaccine on April 6.
Teens who get vaccinated at either site must come with a parent or guardian and have proof such as a birth certificate.
“It’s no different than taking your child to the doctor for the first time,” Jachles said. “You have to be able to articulate that this is your child. You also have to remain with your child through the process.”
This week four pop up sites offering the Johnson and Johnson vaccine opened at different locations throughout the county.
Jachles says they can handle whatever influx of people they get.
