Forests from the western Himalayan region and from the northeastern states are consistently appearing as climate change hotspots across various climate scenarios in three selected time horizons, according to the India State of Forest Report 2021 (ISFR-2021) released on Thursday.
Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Bhupender Yadav, said on Thursday that a study group will be formed to explore how to improve forest cover and forest quality, incorporating the lifestyle change needed to combat climate change.
According to the India State of Forest Report 2021, the forest cover in the 140 hill districts of the country has shown a decrease of 902 sq km with all eight states of the northeast region is also showing a decline.
The top five states in terms of increased forest cover are Andhra Pradesh (647 square km), Telangana ( 632 square km), Odisha (537 square km) and Jharkhand (110 square km).
