Manchester United chief Ed Woodward was informed the Government would not act to prevent the establishment of the European Super League (ESL) during a meeting last week.
That's according to the Sunday Times, which reports Downing Street Chief of Staff Dan Rosenfield told Woodward this without consulting Prime Minister Boris Johnson.
United Executive Vice-Chairman Woodward is known to have visited Downing Street only days before the announcement of the ill-fated and hugely unpopular ESL.
No.10 has since insisted the breakaway competition was not brought up at the meeting, which they claim was merely to discuss the return of fans to stadiums and Covid certification.

The proposed European Super League (ESL) – a breakaway tournament meant to be contested with 20 European clubs annually (with 15 founding members)- collapsed in just 48 hours. The Super League was established on 18 April 2021 with 12 clubs – Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspurs (England), Real Madrid, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid (Spain) and AC Milan, Inter Milan and Juventus (Italy) – as its original founding members. In the ESL, 20 teams were to be a part of competition. 2 groups of 10 teams would play home and away. The top three teams at the end of the first round would automatically qualify for the quarter-finals. The fourth and fifth-place teams would then face each other in a play-off match for the two remaining places in the quarter-finals.

The Daily Star has quoted Venkatesham as saying today: “Arsenal were not the authors of this proposal, despite what many think. On this project ‘the train was leaving the station’, we made the decision to join. We made a bad decision, a terrible one.”
