China's focus on the development of mature-node process technology for ICs may provide it with a bargaining advantage, according to industry observers.

Sharp increases in global demand for advanced and mature chip manufacturing processes continued to significantly bolster equipment purchases by TSMC and other Taiwanese foundry peers in the fourth quarter of 2022, according to statistics released by Taiwan's Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA).

With TSMC customers cutting back on orders or delaying shipment pull-in in the first quarter of 2023, market doubts are emerging about whether the foundry's overall business operations could be turning weak, with its revenues widely believed to see a single-digit sequential fall in the second quarter. At its upcoming earnings call conference slated for April 20, TSMC CEO C. C. Wei is expected to address a spate of major market doubts and set the semiconductor development trend for the second half of the year.

TSMC revenue for March 2023 fell over 10% on both sequential and on-year bases, according to the company's latest report.
