Volunteers prepared to hand out water during a water distribution event at the Fountain Life Center on February 20, 2021 in Houston, Texas.
As of Monday morning, it had been two weeks since Helen McCanick and her neighbors in Wharton, Texas had running water. The freezing temperatures brought by Winter Storm Uri burst their pipes and broke the motor running their well.
McCanick has spent the days since the storm traversing neighboring towns, searching for the pipe and motor parts needed to restore her water. “I am very tired running from place to place, I really am,” said McCanick from the parking lot of yet another hardware store.

WASHINGTON - US President Joe Biden will travel to Houston, Texas on Friday to discuss with local officials relief efforts in the wake of extreme winter weather that caused water shortages and power outages in the state, the White House announced Tuesday.
"The president will meet with local leaders to discuss the winter storm, relief efforts, progress toward recovery and the incredible resilience shown by the people of Houston and Texas," White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki told reporters at a White House press briefing.

Days Of Spotty Power Cost This Texan $1,127. Now Her Account's Overdrawn And Rent's Due.

Surging energy demand following a winter storm in Texas led to huge electricity bills for residents.
Elizabeth Dehghanpoor lost her job as a certified medical assistant six months ago amid a pandemic-induced round of layoffs, and the 26-year-old has depended on her unemployment check to cover the $670 monthly rent on her one-bedroom apartment in Houston ever since.
She would normally spend what was left ― usually about $330 ― on food, her phone bill and electricity. Her power bill normally ranges from $45 to $75, depending on how long she leaves the air conditioner on during hot months. But last week’s catastrophic snow storm threw her penny-pinching survival strategy into disarray. After frigid temperatures brought rolling blackouts to Texas and sent demand surging, her power bill for February topped $1,127, according to screenshots of her account HuffPost reviewed.
