With medical debt burdening millions, a financial regulator steps in to help

When President Barack Obama signed legislation in 2010 to create the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, he said the new agency had one priority: “looking out for people, not big banks, not lenders, not investment houses.” Since then, the CFPB has done its share of policing mortgage brokers, student loan companies, and banks. But as the […] The post With medical debt burdening millions, a financial regulator steps in to help appeared first on Arkansas Advocate.

Elon Musk and Amazon Team Up to Try to Demolish Workers' Rights

Elon Musk is not a fan of unions. Nor are Amazon, Starbucks, or, apparently, Trader Joe’s. Those four companies opened the new year by mounting a legal campaign to destroy the federal agency charged with protecting workers from unfair anti-unionization efforts and maintaining labor peace. If they succeed, they could radically tip the scales in favor of corporations and away from the workers who hope to organize their workplaces.SpaceX, the rocket company founded by Musk, asked a federal judge la

Biden regulators target transaction declined fees, considered another type of bank 'junk fee'

The Biden administration proposed banning another type of bank “junk fee” on Wednesday, targeting fees that are typically charged by banks when a transaction is declined in real time. It's the second major proposal by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau over fees that Americans sometimes run into when they bank, following the bureau's announcement that it plans to reduce overdraft fees to as little as $3. The CFPB's proposal on Wednesday focused on a narrower set of transactions: when a customer tries to withdraw money, send a payment immediately or make a purchase and that transaction is declined at the time of the transaction due to lack of sufficient funds.

Explainer-How is the 'war on the administrative state' faring at the Supreme Court?

Three cases before the U.S. Supreme Court will help determine the advance of the conservative push called the "war on the administrative state" that aims to weaken federal agencies that regulate key aspects of American life and business. The court, with a 6-3 conservative majority, is weighing cases challenging the power of federal agencies to issue regulations and enforce laws in areas ranging from finance to fish conservation, that could have far-reaching reverberations. Administrative agencies have suffered major blows to their authority in recent years when challengers, often aligned with conservative and corporate interest groups, have faced off against Democratic President Joe Biden's administration.
