PARIS (AFP) — The AstraZeneca and Johnson & Johnson vaccines have come under suspicion of causing very rare but serious blood clots in a handful of cases among the millions vaccinated in the drive to bring the pandemic under control.
Here is what we know about the two vaccines, which are based on the same technology.
What happened?
The European Medicines Agency last week said unusual blood clots should be listed as a very rare side effect of the AstraZeneca vaccine, although stressing that overall benefits in preventing Covid-19 outweighed the risks.

Putin snubs Biden over Ukraine

Putin snubs Joe Biden's call for summit on Ukraine: The Kremlin acknowledges US President's phone call and says they discussed Iran's nuclear programme and Afghanistan - but does NOT say if he's agreed to peace talks
Biden, facing his first major foreign policy test against an experienced foe, invited Putin 'to de-escalate tensions' and proposed a summit 'in the coming months', without indicating the Russian president's response
The Kremlin later added that the phone call had taken place at Washington's request, keen to make it appear that Biden had come crawling to his adversary
But Moscow did confirm that shortly after the call with Washington, Putin called the premier of Finland where previous high level talks have been hosted between the nuclear-armed powers

More than 300 businesses have signed an open letter calling on the Biden administration to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the United States to at least half of 2005 levels by 2030. That would nearly double a previous target set by former President Barack Obama in 2015, who pledged a 25 to 28% reduction by 2025.
The United States is not currently on track to meet either goal.

Yesterday, Monday, April 12, 2021, the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons’ (OPCW) Investigation and Identification Team (IIT), whose mission is to identify the perpetrators of the crime of using chemical weapons, issued its second report; this report was the result of the IIT’s investigation into the chemical weapons attack on Saraqeb city on February 4, 2018, with the OPCW Fact-Finding Mission (FFM) having previously determined that chemical weapons were used on the same date and in the same location.

The signatories include some of largest companies in the United States, including Walmart, Apple, McDonald's and Starbucks. "A bold 2030 target is needed to catalyze a zero-emissions future, spur a robust economic recovery, create millions of well-paying jobs, and allow the U.S. to 'build back better' from the pandemic," the letter said, echoing the president's economic recovery slogan.

United Kingdom raises the bar for climate leadership on export finance, with others countries needing to follow suit

that will adhere to a set of principles to
better integrate climate policy objectives in public export finance, alongside Denmark, Germany, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom. At home with Hilary Weston

The former model who invented the Primark label, owns Brown Thomas and went on be Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, has worked alongside her billionaire husband, Galen, for five decades

Hilary Weston is wintering in Windsor – a gated community for the very wealthy on Florida’s Atlantic coast, with a somewhat fitting name. In Canada, where the Westons sometimes live, the couple has been compared to royalty, and it was Hilary who chose the name for the Florida estate that now has some 325 luxury homes (she also has a say in who gets to buy or build there), but Windsor is just a small part of the Weston story. Together Galen and Hilary Weston head up a multi-billion dollar fashion and food empire that includes Brown Thomas as well as Penneys, Selfridges, and luxury goods stores and supermarkets across Canada. Add to that vast property interests and a generous philanthropic programme, and you have a life that does not allow for too much Florida downtime.

Manchester United consolidated their runners-up position in the Premier League on the weekend.
The Reds emerged as 3-1 winners against Tottenham in London thanks to goals Fred, Edinson Cavani and Mason Greenwood, and the result means United now trail the league leaders Manchester City by just 11 points with one game in hand.
While it seems highly unlikely United's rivals will collapse as far as the title is concerned, the result almost ensured Ole Gunnar Solskjaer 's side will secure Champions League football this season, and success in Europe could also be achieved this campaign.

'Not close to normal': Why Olympics will be truly bizarre

The first modern Olympic Games held in an odd-numbered year, Tokyo 2021 is going to be very different from all of the others.
As the world's biggest multi-sports event, the level of planning that goes into running an Olympic Games is already mind-boggling but the extra biosecurity challenges caused by the global pandemic have elevated Tokyo to a whole new level of complexity.
It may not appear that unusual to anyone casually watching events unfold on television, but rest assured, nothing on the ground at Tokyo 2021 will be close to normal.
Foreign spectators have already been told they won't be allowed into Japan so they will have to stay at home while the decision on how many local fans can attend events is still pending - though one thing is already known: if they do get inside the stadiums, they'll have to keep quiet because singing and cheering isn't permitted.

PSG knock holders Bayern out of Champions League to reach semis
By Julien Pretot
(Adds Pochettino quote)
PARIS (Reuters) – Paris St Germain reached the Champions League semi-finals despite a 1-0 home defeat by holders Bayern Munich on Tuesday as they progressed on away goals after a 3-3 aggregate result in a thriller that was on a knife edge until the final whistle.
Bayern striker Eric Choupo-Moting scored the only goal before the interval but it was not enough to overturn the German side’s 3-2 loss in last week’s first leg.
Mauricio Pochettino’s PSG side, who struggled at times in Munich, had the clearest chances but lacked efficiency, with Neymar hitting the woodwork twice and Kylian Mbappe’s speed proving tough to handle but with no end product.

Geneva's international expo of fine watches switches to Shanghai on Wednesday for a physical version after staging an online edition to keep the prestigious fair going during the pandemic.
The Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie, now restyled as Watches and Wonders, was cancelled last year due to the coronavirus crisis.
This year, with Europe battling a third wave of the pandemic, the fair -- one of the major annual gatherings for luxury watchmakers -- opened online on April 7, closing on Tuesday.
But an in-person version will run from Wednesday until Sunday in Shanghai, where the coronavirus is under control.

WHERE IN THE WORLD IS KERRY? Kerry to visit China ahead of White House climate summit
U.S. climate envoy John Kerry will become the first Biden administration official to visit China as the U.S. attempts to enlist the world’s top greenhouse gas emitter in efforts to reduce international emissions.

In a statement Tuesday, a State Department spokesperson said Kerry will visit Shanghai and Seoul from April 14 to April 17 and discuss “raising global climate ambition” with South Korean and Chinese leaders.
Key timing: The trip will come days before an April 22 White House climate summit, where President Biden is set to announce the new emissions target under the Paris climate agreement. Biden reentered the pact after former President Trump

House Republicans plan to hold a three-day forum next week to present their ideas on addressing climate change and counter a climate summit event President Joe Biden is hosting on Earth Day with top greenhouse gas-emitting countries.
The
Washington Examinerreported on the House Republican plan as it was emerging last week, but it was provided additional exclusive details by a GOP leadership aide.
House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, a Republican, conceived the plan to demonstrate that the GOP has its own agenda to address climate change but that the party disagrees with the aggressive path being charted by Biden and Democrats in Congress.
