5 Oscar Burning Questions, Including That Crazy Best Actress Race

2. Who the heck will win Best Actress, anyway?
There hasn’t been an acting category this wide open in years, because the last time four different actresses won the Golden Globe, the Critics Choice Award, the SAG Award and BAFTA was, well, never. Andra Day won at the Globes for “The United States vs. Billie Holiday,” Carey Mulligan at the CCA for “Promising Young Woman,” Viola Davis at SAG for “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” and Frances McDormand at BAFTA for “Nomadland” — and any of the four could quite conceivably win on Oscar night. (Sorry, Vanessa Kirby.)
Day might have the toughest road because she’s the only nominee from her film, but Julianne Moore won as the only “Still Alice” nominee in 2014 and Charlize Theron as the only one for “Monster” in 2003. Mulligan and McDormand have the advantage of being in films also nominated for Best Picture, but Davis’ film could well end up winning as many awards as “Promising Young Woman” or “Nomadland.”

AWARDS BEAT
(Joshua Richardson/Searchlight)
With Oscar nomination voting beginning on Friday, Searchlight’s “Nomadland” is in a strong position. But history suggests that it’s also a precarious position.
Chloé Zhao’s American travelogue has won the lion’s share of critics’ awards this year, won the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture – Drama and sits comfortably atop most Oscar prediction polls. But we’re at a strange point in the Oscar race, one which usually arrives in early January — a point where almost every award that’s been handed out so far has come from voters who are critics or journalists or academics, and where we really haven’t heard from the industry.

A version of this story about “Nomadland” appears in the Oscar Nominations Preview issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
Cinematographer Joshua James Richards, an awards magnet for his gorgeous orangey work on “Nomandland,” has spent most of his career out in the real, rural world. His credits include three features with “Nomadland” director (and his partner in life), Chloé Zhao, all made in the American West or Midwest, where scorpions dance maniacally along the desert floor. Nomadland
A version of this story about Chloé Zhao and "Nomadland" first appeared in the Actors/Directors/Screenwriters issue of TheWrap's awards magazine.
Anybody who's tried to get in touch with Chloé Zhao over the last few years is probably familiar with the messages that come back from her reps. "She's traveling." "I'm not really sure where she is right now." "She's someplace where there's no reception."
"No reception? Yeah," Zhao said with a laugh. "I sometimes feel there's so much being put on us — our jobs, our relationships, bills and responsibilities — that I have no idea who I am and what I want to say. As a filmmaker, that's a scary feeling. So when you pack up some stuff and go to a place where nobody knows who you are, and you have no reception, you hear yourself better, and it makes me less anxious about the choices I'm making. I just feel like we all have that desire to just rediscover ourselves when we can shed everything."

Chloe Zhao’s acclaimed awards contender “Nomadland” is set to be released in select theaters and drive-in venues on Feb. 19, along with simultaneously debuting on Hulu, Searchlight Pictures announced on Thursday.
The film, starring Frances McDormand as a woman who takes the road after falling on hard economic times, is also getting an exclusive run in select Imax theaters beginning Jan. 29.
In his review of the film, TheWrap’s Steve Pond wrote, Zhao’s “Nomadland” is a tiny indie film on a huge scale, an intimate drama set against the vast spaces of the American West. It’s also a typical production for the young Chinese-American director Zhao in that its cast is made up of non-actors playing themselves, or versions of themselves — except that at the center of the film is a two-time Oscar-winning actress whose very presence, you’d think, would upset the delicate balance that Zhao struck in her films “Songs My Brothers Taught Me” and “The Rider.”
