It Took Nearly 30 Years. Is America Ready for Ben Okri Now?

The acclaimed Nigerian British writer is resonating with American readers in a moment of national crisis. “Maybe nations go through a time when they just can’t hear certain kinds of voices,” he said.

“You gotta put in the hours,” John said, adding, “I was up all night till 11.”
John, known as the Freedom Artist for his patriotic and military works, painted a 100-foot-long presentation of military logos, an American flag and eagle, and an image of this country’s Middle East fighting.
“It’s wonderful,” said Post 261 Commander Gary Seng. “I can’t express what he has done to enhance the post the way he has.”
A helicopter pilot and truck driver in Vietnam from 1970 to '72, Seng said the mural “brings back memories. Some good memories, some bad memories. I try not to think of the bad memories.”

2020 Year in Review by Graham Sleight

Graham Sleight (2015) by Francesca Myman
Publishing lead-times being what they are, the extraordinary events of 2020 largely weren’t reflected in the books that came out in the year – or at least, not intentionally. I managed to read a good deal of thought-provoking SF and fantasy this year, but some books seemed even more relevant than expected because of the pandemic-shuttered world they emerged into. How posterity will view them – let alone how it’ll view the books that’ll doubtless follow about COVID itself – is a question for another day.
Samit Basu’s
Chosen Spirits (Simon & Schuster India) offered a picture of India that was, its author insisted, both a dystopia and less bad than some alternatives. It certainly dug into the country’s culture and how it might change under the pressures bearing down on it.

Ben Okri on Perception and Illusion

Save this story for later.
Your story in this week’s issue, “A Wrinkle in the Realm,” revolves around a man who notices that women suddenly seem afraid of him and cross the street to avoid him. You don’t mention the man’s race, but the experience he describes is familiar to many Black men in the U.S. and, presumably, in Britain and elsewhere, too. Do you think of the story as one about racial identity or fear?

The fascinating thing was to write a story about something without naming it, in such a way that the story speaks about it more strongly than if it had been named. I began with an experience that, over time, had become ground into the fabric of reality that is absorbed as a part of living. This is when it becomes most insidious. It eats into the psychic cavities. After a long time, I sought a way to write about it at a slight remove, so that the distortion that it wreaks on the soul would become more evident through the absurdity of the strategy my character develops for dealing with it. The story is also about perception—how we perceive the way we are perceived.
