Furloughed Orlando hotel employees receive full-ride scholarships

Jordon Cooper says Tuesday is like a dream come true.He and three other furloughed Orlando hotel employees were presented with full-ride scholarships to pursue an associate's degree at Valencia College. It's the American Hotel & Lodging Foundation's Empowering Youth Program scholarship."It's like winning the lottery and you find out you actually won and now I can go the school and follow my dream and now make sure all my dreams become reality,” Cooper said.Cooper, like other students, graduated from Second Harvest's Culinary Training Program. He landed his first job only to be furloughed because of the pandemic. The foundation partners with Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida.“It's the first time our foundation has ever done something like this but what better time than now?” Shelly Weir said.Weir is the senior vice president of career development at American Hotel and Lodging Foundation."All of their tuition, all of their books, all of their supplies, all of their lab fees will all be covered by this scholarship,” Weir said. Each of the four students received a new laptop too.Cooper wants to get a restaurant management degree.“Anybody can cook from like a pack of ramen noodles, to hot dogs, to beignets, to lasagna. You can always learn how to cook no matter where you go. The hardest thing is learning now to do the business stuff because you can't sit there and watch someone do business,” Cooper said. “I'm going to try my best to use the skills that I'm planning on learning and the skills that I already know to better myself for the future and to give back to my community as well.”
