What Ridgewood students learned about town's segregated housing legacy

A team of Ridgewood High School students recently uncovered some unsettling history about their town.
Housing deeds that banned people of color from buying homes. Red-lined maps where government loan agents gave lower rankings to areas with more Black and immigrant residents, dooming [those] areas to disinvestment and low property values. A Ridgewood Code published by the Ridgewood Board of Realtors in 1941 that said its goal was to bring here only the kind of people who are here and thus preserve the congenial neighbor tradition.
The students found these documents while researching a paper on housing inequality that on Thursday was named a regional winner in a competition hosted by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. ....

Kerry students triumph at Young Scientist Awards

So many things have changed this year but, thankfully, at least one constant has remained the same - Kerry students coming out on top at the annual BT Young Scientists Awards.
This year s event saw three Kerry projects emerge as the winners of their categories while numerous other projects from around the county had close second and third place finishes.
One student who was a big winner from the three-day event was Conor Casey, a sixth year student from Pobalscoil Inbhear Scéine in Kenmare.
Conor won first place in the senior individual category of the Chemical, Physical and Mathematical section for his project Using Machine Learning to Improve Numerical Weather Prediction . ....
