A Christian to head the Indonesian National Police

After more than 40 years, a Christian has been appointed as head of the Indonesian National Police. General Listyo Sigit Prabowo, who was sworn in today at a ceremony led by President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo, replaces General Idham Azis, who has retired.
Prabowo, a 51-year-old Protestant, was promoted to the top post of the police after heading the Criminal Investigation Agency (
Bareskrim).
He was President Jokowi’s only candidate, and his appointment was unanimously approved on January 20 by the People's Representative Council, Indonesia’s lower house of parliament.
The super policeman also received the support of leading Muslim organisations and Islamic clerics in Banten, the province bordering the capital known for its religious conservatism, where he led the local police.

Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Joko Widodo inaugurated Listyo Sigit Prabowo as the National Police chief at the State Palace, here on Wednesday, to replace General Idham Azis, due to retire in early February of 2021.
The head of state also promoted Prabowo to the rank of general from commissioner general based on Presidential Decree Number 7/Polri/2021 dated January 27, 2021.

He will be the third person from the religious minority to hold the position in the predominantly Muslim nation.
Commissioner General Listyo Sigit Prabowo was the only nominee and was approved by the House of Representatives on Jan. 20.
According to UCA News, the new chief who heads the National Police’s Criminal Investigation Agency, is a close ally of Indonesian President Jokowi and will replace General Idham Azis, who recently retired at the end of January.

WEST JAVA: Indonesia will soon have a new police chief with the House of Representatives (DPR) approving Com.Gen.Listyo Sigit Prabowo as the successor to General Idham Azis, who retires on February 1, 2021.
Prabowo, who was nominated by President Joko Widodo as Azis’ successor, underwent a fit-and-proper test at the House’s Commission III, which oversees legal affairs, on Wednesday (January 20).

Jakarta (ANTARA) - National Police chief candidate Com.Gen.Listyo Sigit Prabowo must continue Indonesia's war on drugs by intensifying law enforcement against domestic and trans-national rings, which remain a threat to the entire nation, a legislator said.
"I have appealed to him to keep focusing on handling the drug crimes," said Andi Rio Idris Padjalangi, a member of Commission III of the House of Representatives (DPR), which oversees legal affairs, here on Wednesday.

When they were raided, they were carrying 10 packs of crystal methamphetamine Banjarmasin, S Kalimantan (ANTARA) - The South Kalimantan police thwarted two suspected drug couriers' attempt to trade some 11.318 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine at Duta Mall in Banjarmasin, the capital of South Kalimantan Province, on January 13, 2021.
The suspects, only identified by their initials SF (37) and ZL (41), were caught red handed along with 10 packs of crystal meth, Chief of the South Kalimantan Police's Criminal Investigation Directorate, Sen.Coms.Niko Irawan said.
The provincial police's anti-drug squad personnel received a tip-off about a possible drug trafficking operation. They then followed up the tip-off by launching a week-long probe, he was quoted by ANTARA as saying here Sunday.

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia's Press Council has appealed to all elements of society at large to keep defending and protecting freedom of the press because it is one of the fundamental pillars of democracy and an integral part of freedom of expression.
"To this end, the Press Council urges all parties to create a conductive situation and to show a collective commitment to making the quality of our press freedom get improved and beneficial for the entire nation. The press freedom is part of the principles of democracy that must collectively be fought," Press Council Head Mohammad Nuh said in a statement that ANTARA quoted in Jakarta on Sunday.

All drug packages bore a similar symbol "55" Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Jakarta Metropolitan Police apprehended 11 suspects for smuggling 201 kilograms (kg) of crystal methamphetamine from the Middle East into Indonesia, the Jakarta police’s spokesman, Sen. Coms. Yusri Yunus, stated.
The suspects were recently arrested at the WIR Hotel in the Petamburan neighborhood, Central Jakarta, from whom the cops seized 196 packs of crystal meth weighing 201 kg, Yunus was quoted by ANTARA as saying in Jakarta on Wednesday.
All drug packages bore a similar symbol "55", he noted, adding that police investigators believe that the Middle Eastern network is involved in the drug smuggling operation.
