How was it for EU?
For Europe, the Brexit deal makes the best of a bad business
The EU got an orderly transition that leaves Britain worse off than membership
HEN THE trade deal between the
EU and Britain was done, there was little celebration in Brussels. Instead, the moaning began. “This is a dark day for the European fishing industry,” declared Gerard van Balsfoort, chairman of the European Fisheries Alliance, a lobby group for fishermen. Indeed, conflict over matters piscatorial dominated the final stages of the negotiations, leaving economists flabbergasted that such a tiny sector could hook so much attention.

Brexit: The fishing industry reacts to the trade deal - not a sellout but not a Christmas bonanza either

Of all the Brexit issues, fishing was arguably the most symbolic.
The UK fleet felt they had everything to gain and almost nothing to lose so how have they done? The picture is mixed and everyone is using the caveat of let’s see the detail but the sense from the industry in the UK tonight is that it’s “not a sellout but not a Christmas bonanza either”. The UK fleet will get more share of the quota over the next five years, 15% more in 2021 rising each year hitting 25% in five years time, at which point the UK will achieve full independent coastal status and will decide who gets what in further negotiations. David Stevens is a trawler skipper in Newlyn, he told ITV News: "On the whole negotiators did well… good amounts of quota repatriated”.

Likelihood of no deal continues to grow but UK-EU negotiations could carry on
The chairman of European Parliament's trade committee gave a gloomy outlook on the likelihood of a Brexit trade deal on Sunday, tweeting that "emergency measures "would likely need to be agreed between the European Union and the United Kingdom.
Sunday evening was the latest deadline for the two sides to come to an agreement on post-Brexit trade relations between the UK and the 27-member bloc, which according to recent figures published from Germany's ifo Center for International Economics, accounts for 47 percent of Britain's exports.
