Shane van Gisbergen has had to settle for equalling a Supercars record rather than setting a new one.
After six races of the season, the Kiwi driver was on track to surpass the mark for the best start to a campaign, having equalled that of Allan Moffat (1977) and Mark Skaife (1994). However, it was teammate Jamie Whincup who ended van Gisbergen's bid to etch his name alone in the history books, winning the first of the two Tasmania Supersprint races on Sunday.

Shane van Gisbergen completed a dominant sweep of the Mount Panorama 500, with the Kiwi cruising to victory in Race 2 today.
Van Gisbergen felt at home on the mountain when it mattered on the weekend, claiming two wins and a pole to assert himself as the 2021 championship favourite, in the absence of defending champion Scott McLaughlin, now in the United States racing IndyCars.
Today, the Red Bull Ampol Racing driver crossed the line with a 6.1s margin over Cameron Waters, who led the opening stint.

Shane van Gisbergen put on an extraordinary exhibition to take out the 66th New Zealand Grand Prix — delivering a show not seen in the Toyota Racing Series since its 2005 inception.
Van Gisbergen started dead last from pit lane but took the chequered flag at the end of 28 laps from Andre Heimgartner and Matthew Payne.
Van Gisbergen didn't make it out of pit lane for the formation lap due to his fire extinguisher going off in the car. The resulting penalty meant the Supercars star had to start from pit lane.
