Bird ringing at Manoel Island's Glacis Park

In an effort to monitor the use of the Glacis Park at Manoel Island by small land birds during spring migration, bird ringers from BirdLife Malta’s ringing scheme recently held a series of bird ringing sessions at the island’s Glacis Park.
The Manoel Island Glacis Park is an isolated green area surrounded by an urbanised environment, attracting birds on their journey from southerly wintering areas up to their breeding territories in Europe.  The Glacis Park will be rehabilitated as part of MIDI’s plans to develop Manoel Island, providing a public park measuring 80,000sqm for the public to enjoy and appreciate.

Heritage at the heart of the Manoel Island master plan

The revised MIDI master plan for Manoel Island has integrated the island’s rich heritage at its core, recreating centuries of Malta’s history through restoration and conservation of the iconic buildings and sites which are synonymous with Manoel Island.
Manoel Island has a legacy intertwined with Malta’s history, reflected in heritage buildings and sites that define the island’s identity.

Protecting, restoring and conserving these important landmarks is central to the design philosophy of the revised MIDI master plan for Manoel Island – not just to honour Malta’s history, but to preserve it for future generations.

Manoel Island's new master plan – Conrad Borg Manché

They say hard work pays off. Indeed, it does. Following years of debate and discussions, Midi has presented a revised master plan for Manoel Island, which respects the rich architectural heritage and, more importantly, provides more open spaces for the enjoyment of the local community.
During our debates on Manoel Island, the objective of the Gżira local council and environmentalist Claire Bonello has been to preserve this unique destination in the heart of Gżira. The council, together with Bonello, wanted to ensure that Midi’s development will not restrict access to the foreshore of Manoel Island, fully respects the heritage sites and buildings and will lead to only low-rise buildings and an environmental balance by creating accessible open spaces for the public to enjoy.

New MIDI masterplan to improve Manoel Island

The newly revised MIDI masterplan for the restoration and development of Manoel Island will respect this iconic landmark’s rich heritage, while readying it to be enjoyed by everyone in the local and national community.
While Manoel Island is a critical part of Malta’s history, it remains a much-loved part of the local landscape and culture.
Preserving this unique heritage is at the heart of the revised MIDI masterplan to restore and develop Manoel Island – a plan that was recently submitted to the Planning Authority alongside a revised Environmental Impact Assessment to the Environmental Resources Authority.
The 2021 masterplan makes a series of key improvements when compared to the 1999 and 2017 designs, focusing on preservation, sustainability and public wellbeing while transforming Manoel Island into a space prepared for Malta’s future.

MIDI plc has submitted a new sustainable masterplan for the restoration and development of Manoel Island to the Planning Authority (PA) and a revised Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) to the Environmental Resources Authority (ERA).
In this revised masterplan the footprint of the new buildings to be developed on Manoel Island has been scaled down from to 10% of the site area from 26% as originally contemplated. Likewise gross floor area of the new buildings is significantly reduced as this now totals 55,000sqm compared to the 95,000sqm in the original masterplan.

Before and after: Midi's new plan for Manoel Island after archaeological finds

Midi has submitted a new masterplan for the Manoel Island project, scaling down the gross area of the new buildings by a third and increasing open spaces following new archaeological finds.
The revised plan comes six months after the Environment and Planning Review Tribunal annulled the environment impact assessment and outline development permit for the Manoel Island master plan. Conflict of interest concerns were raised after it was revealed the cultural heritage report that formed part of the EIA was drawn up by the son of one of MIDI’s directors.
On Thursday, CEO Mark Portelli told
Times of Malta that in its new submissions, Midi “conceded” land reclamation allowed by a 1999 deed of emphyteusis after considering concerns flagged by Gżira residents.
