The American Heart Association's signature women's platform designed to increase awareness for women's heart health, Go Red for Women, has become more personal to the WXII 12 community in the past year.In June, WXII 12 News' morning anchor Kimberly Van Scoy was diagnosed with congestive heart failure. It's a fight she will wage for the rest of her life. Heart disease is the No. 1 cause of both death and disability in women, with one in-every three succumbing to the condition. Click the video player below to hear from Kimberly Van Scoy as she shares an update and adviceThe news came as a big shock to Kimberly, but she has reassured everyone that she is feeling better and has the "best of doctors" who are taking care of her.In a message to viewers after her diagnosis, Kimberly said she has a lot of faith in her medical team -- doing exactly what they are telling her to do."I want to get well, so, I am going to do what I have to," she said.Kimberly will post updates on her Facebook page to allow viewers to stay updated on her progress. Her family, friends and coworkers threw her a surprise "Get Well Soon" parade in August, which was led by her grandkids.Kimberly said she is thankful for all of the kind emails, letters and messages from viewers."I'm just blown away by everybody's kindness," she said. "I'm doing OK, as you can see. I'm standing and doing great, just recuperating here at home and doing what my doctors tell me to do and I hope to be back soon. "The National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute reports that heart disease also has racial disparities.Black women have a higher chance of dying from heart disease, and at a younger age, than white women. But regardless of race, nearly 80% of cardiac events can be prevented with modest changes to diet and lifestyle. Choosing foods low in saturated and trans fats, as well as sodium, along with adding fruits, veggies, fiber-rich whole grains, fish and nuts to your diet can be beneficial. Being physically active by walking and muscle-strengthening activities can also lessen the risks.Heredity also plays a role, but starting your kids off with at least 60 minutes of activity a day gives them a head start on heart disease. To raise awareness about cardiovascular disease, WXII 12 News on-air talent and employees are wearing red on Fridays this month. Because this is a fight we can win, not just for Kimberly, but every woman she represents. You can send Kimberly notes of encouragement to her on Facebook page, which is the best way to contact her. You can also send cards and letters care of WXII 12 News, 700 Coliseum Drive, Winston-Salem, NC 27106.If you would like to support the mission of the American Heart Association, please click here to donate.
