Nigeria's Electoral Body, INEC Says It Won't Recognise Labour Party's Controversial National Convention

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has disassociated itself from Wednesday’s national convention organised by the Labour Party in Anambra State.   The Chief Press Secretary to INEC Chairman, Mr Rotimi Oyekanmi, who disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) said the conduct of the convention was not monitored by INEC.   Although he declined to state why it was not monitored, SaharaReporters has done several reports about the crisis rocking the party.

Nigerian Government To Collect Nine Taxes, Says Tax Agency, FIRS

The Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service, Zacch Adedeji, says the agency will not introduce additional taxes in the country to shore up the revenue base of the country.   Adedeji disclosed this when the Chief Executive Officer of Guinness Nigeria Plc, Adebayo Alli, led the management team of the company on a visit to the Revenue House in Abuja on Wednesday.

Official Figures Confirm Britain Entered Recession In 2023

Official figures have confirmed that Britain's economy entered a shallow recession last year. This leaves Prime Minister Rishi Sunak with a challenge to reassure voters that the economy is safe with him before an election expected later this year.   According to the Office for National Statistics on Thursday, Gross domestic product shrank by 0.1% in the third quarter and by 0.3% in the fourth quarter, unchanged from preliminary estimates.

Nigerian High Court Orders Immediate Release Of 313 Detained Suspected Terrorists

Nigeria’s Federal High Court sitting in Borno, the Borno state capital has ordered the immediate release of at least 313 detained suspected terrorists arrested by the military.   The Director, Defence Media Operations, Maj. Gen. Buba Edward disclosed this during the operational briefing on Thursday in Abuja.

Labour Party Board Of Trustees Rejects National Convention 'Charade' Held By Abure, Takes Over Party's Affairs As Crisis Deepens

The Labour Party Board of Trustees (BoT) has rejected the outcome of the National Convention of the party which was held in Anambra State on Wednesday under the leadership of Julius Abure.   This is contained in a statement issued late Wednesday, March 27, by the BoT, through its Chairman, Comrade S.O.Z. Ejiofor.   The Board added that the affairs of the party are therefore within the jurisdiction of their members following the expiration of the tenure in office of the immediate past National Working Committee, NWC, led by Julius Abure.

Budget Padding Scandal: Suspended Ningi Demands Reinstatement, Threatens To Seek Legal Action

The suspended senator representing Bauchi Central in the Nigerian Senate, Ahmed Ningi, has written to Senate President Godswill Akpabio, demanding that his suspension should be lifted.   Ningi, in a letter titled ‘Request To Lift The Suspension Of Senator Abdul Ahmed Ningi,’ written by his lawyer, Mr Femi Falana (SAN) on Wednesday, March 27, 2024, threatened to seek legal action if his suspension was not lifted in the next seven days. The Senate on March 12 suspended Senator Ningi for three months over allegations of budget padding.

15-year-old Girl, 3 Others Killed, Seven Injured During Stabbing Spree At Multiple Locations In U.S. Community

Four people were killed and seven were injured when a man went on a stabbing rampage Wednesday across multiple locations in a northern Illinois community in the US.   According to Rockford Police Chief Carla Redd, a 22-year-old man is in police custody and is being questioned.   She added that one of the people who was wounded remained in critical condition, AP News reports.
