Television Review: 'Hemingway' Documentary Explores Defining American Artist

Hemingway takes in the genius, the agony, and the sins of this defining American artist.
Ernest Hemingway’s first wife, Hadley Richardson, said there were “so many sides to him he defied geometry.” A man’s man who liked to be called “Catherine” in bed, an apostle of frankness who often lied about his feats, a libertarian who spied for Stalin, he left us with a biography as overstuffed as his work was lean. He was an object of fascination like no other writer, and he receives his due in the superb new documentary
Hemingway, a three-part, six-hour film for PBS directed by Ken Burns and Lynn Novick, with a penetrating script by Geoffrey C. Ward.

Hemingway on PBS: The American writer who sought "the truest sentence that you know"

Hemingway, a documentary series by Ken Burns and Lynn Novick, premiered on PBS April 5. Its three parts, each approximately two hours, are now available online. It is eminently worth watching.
Ernest Hemingway (1899–1961) was one of the most important American novelists and short-story writers of the 20th century, and a literary figure with an immense global influence and following.
He is best known for his three most significant novels,
The Sun Also Rises (1926),
A Farewell to Arms (1929) and
For Whom the Bell Tolls (1940), as well as innumerable and often scintillating short stories and nonfiction works. Hemingway wrote about the two world wars and the Spanish Civil War. He also wrote about love affairs, personal betrayal and suicide, as well as bullfighting, big-game hunting and deep-sea fishing.

Following the release of the Montecristo 1935 Anniversary, Altadis U.S.A. continues to focus on its most iconic premium brand with the upcoming Montecristo Epic Vintage 12, a cigar that the company says contains tobacco from a 2012 harvest. It’s the newest addition to the vintage-specific Montecristo Epic series, which began nine years ago and has seen little expansion since.
Rafael Nodal, head of product capability for Altadis’ parent company Tabacalera USA, tells
Cigar Aficionado that the Epic Vintage 12 consists of an Ecuador Sumatra wrapper, Dominican binder and a filler blend of Nicaraguan leaf as well as some Dominican tobacco grown in 2012—the cigar’s defining element.

The powers delegated by the proposed Constitution to the federal government, are few and defined. Those which are to remain in the State governments are numerous and indefinite. The former will be exercised principally on external objects, as war, peace, negotiation, and foreign commerce; with which last the power of taxation will, for the most part, be connected. The powers reserved to the several States will extend to all the objects which, in the ordinary course of affairs, concern the lives, liberties, and properties of the people, and the internal order, improvement, and prosperity of the State.

Canal Fulton's Fennel and Thyme helps the fight against hunger

The Independent
CANAL FULTON  A city restaurant owner wants to help feed her community, and she is looking to others to help in the effort.
Fennel and Thyme owner Stacy Davis believes everyone deserves to sit down to a hot meal regardless of their means. That's why she started a voucher program to help feed the hungry.
Davis began her food prep and catering business by renting the kitchen of S.A.L.T. Box Ministries, an outreach program at St. John Lutheran Church that provides hot meals, clothing and groceries to those who need a hand.
"Maybe I was naive," Davis said. "Being over at the S.A.L.T. Box, I found out there was a lot of need in our community. It kind of opened my eyes."

Cuba Expanding Private Sector Industries – halfwheel

Cuba Expanding Private Sector Industries
Cuba’s communist government has authorized the expansion of private industry in most sectors of the country’s economy. It’s a change that was originally approved last August, though was approved by the country’s powerful Council of Ministers on Friday.
Currently, there are 127 authorized work activities that are allowed to be done by private labor. Most of those center around tourism like restaurants or renting rooms. The change will mean that more than 2,000 work activities will now be authorized for private work, of which 124 will be limited.
The government did not announce which areas will be limited, though
