UBI experiment success

More evidence that UBIs work
The report is back on another Universal Basic Income trial, this time in the USA. And as with the others, it shows that this policy works:
After getting $500 per month for two years without rules on how to spend it, 125 people in California paid off debt, got full-time jobs and reported lower rates of anxiety and depression, according to a study released Wednesday.[…]
When the program started in February 2019, 28% of the people slated to get the free money had full-time jobs. One year later, 40% of those people had full-time jobs. A control group of people who did not get the money saw a 5 percentage point increase in full-time employment over that same time period.

No Right Turn: Give the Rangitata back

Idiot/Savant at No Right Turn wrote on Thursday:
An irrigation company’s decision to relinquish its consent to take extra water from the Rangitata River when in high flow has been hailed as a “gift to New Zealand” by anglers.Rangitata Diversion Race Management Ltd (RDRML) was awarded the consent to take an extra 10 cumecs in water when the river was flowing 110 cumecs or higher by an Environment Canterbury-appointed independent panel in 2018.
However, appeals by Fish and Game, Ngāi Tahu and Te Rūnanga o Arowhenua to the Environment Court had delayed the consent’s implementation.
RDRML chief executive Tony McCormick confirmed on Tuesday it had decided to relinquish the consent, describing it as “positive news” and adding they would make a further statement later.

Level 3 again … be kind

Auckland is back into level three lockdown.  The check points around the city have again been put in place and big events, including the round the bays run have been cancelled.
The caution is understandable.  The latest two cases, a son and his mother, were potentially exposed to the UK variant B117 thorough a family member who was a casual contact of the Papatoetoe student.  This shows how dangerous the virus is and why the cautious approach is the right thing to do.
There has been some social media blow back, and pointed words from the Prime Minister, against the young man for going to a gym after having had his covid test.  From Jason Walls at the Herald:

Critic's Chair: Guy Somerset watches the first of four documentaries on the allegations against Woody Allen in his years in the Farrow household, and hears the air of truth in the early testimonies against him.
Of all the witness statements with the air of truth about them in the first episode of the four-part documentary series
Allen v. Farrow, only one raises a smile rather than prompting a queasy feeling. Not that the smile lasts long.

Trigger-happy people are dangerous, guns shoot people and males get high on guns more than females. Police tried the careful approach to a guman in Aramoana and lost out.
There has to be a better program for these 'lost boys' sent away from home by the sleazy-peazy Australian government wanting to slide out of their failures to integrate people. We are much the same here, but we haven't the option to pass the parcel. So let's have a sensible program, and give them something to ground them here, ability to turn their lives around and have a regular earning job and still keep in touch with there. Perhaps if the rehab was successful some returnees could help in working with our crims here on the basis 'If I can remake my life so can you'. And bring in a visa system so we can keep track of what goes from here to there and vice versa. It would help if we knew how much vice is travelling over the Tasman!

deep sea oil drilling « The Standard

The announcement comes with little fanfare, but marks another huge moment for people power, for iwi, hapū, environmental groups, and the hundreds of thousands of people who for the last decade have maintained one of the most relentless campaigns of the modern era to put an end to deep sea oil exploration in New Zealand.

Hi Pat. I think that ChCh is a bad example. Since the earthquake the city has spread out hugely to the west, north west and south west. In the east of course, which has historically been lower cost housing, its just one huge barren landscape in many areas. The whole market is totally distorted.
The new dwellings are all of a certain type. Flashy, expensive and not really good rental material. So, I would strongly disagree that supply has increased
in the rental market.
Agree with you re excess liquidity, along with interest rates sub 3% and the wrong incentives (lack of Capital Gains Tax).

Bloody annoying behaviour from Vector yesterday. Caused the site to be off for most of the day and evening.
We'd been informed earlier in the month of a power shutdown from 8am to 10 am. That is on the limits of my UPS. I just organised to be home during the morning. The UPS ran until about 1013.
By which time, I was asking about why it was taking so long. The workers then told me that the power would be off until sometime around 4pm.
Unfortunately the system shutdown hard, because of problem in the UPS configuration. I had to repair the partition tables of the two drives that are the current TS system.

And if the new owner wants to live in it ….
aj …
Essentially over the past 20yrs we've actually had to put money
into the business to keep it afloat, and our tenants in their homes. We're now in the position of
having shitloads of equity, but
crap cash flow, and because I'm close to retiring that isn't something I can sustain anymore.
The trouble with this is that I've heard this description from not only landlords but farmers as well, except farmers don't like to flaunt their equity in public.
The total values of assets that can be realised is the figure that most people will focus on. If you have $10M in equity but moan your a**e off about pitiful cashflow, then you generally won't get a lot of sympathy.
