Manchester City scored twice in the second half through Riyad Mahrez and Phil Foden to beat Borussia Dortmund 2-1 on Wednesday and reach the Champions League semi-finals for the first time in six years.
Foden, who scored City's winner in their 2-1 first-leg victory, fired in off the post in the 76th minute after Mahrez had converted a 55th-minute penalty awarded for a handball by Emre Can to secure a 4-2 aggregate triumph.

DORTMUND:
Borussia Dortmund coach Edin Terzic says Erling Haaland is making a big contribution to the team even when he fails to score but does not expect the Norway international's dry spell to continue for long.
Haaland has not scored in his last seven games for club and country, including two league and two Champions League games for Dortmund and three World Cup qualifiers with Norway last month.

Biden picks energy lawyer with Alaska ties as Interior's No. 2 official

WASHINGTON — The White House is naming Tommy Beaudreau, a former Obama administration official, to be deputy secretary at the Interior Department after dropping plans for a more liberal nominee who faced key Senate opposition.
President Joe Biden on Wednesday nominated Beaudreau, a former chief of staff at the department who was the first director of the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management. The agency, created after the disastrous BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010, oversees offshore drilling and wind power.
Beaudreau grew up in Alaska and is politically close to Republican Sen. Lisa Murkowski, a former chair of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee who holds great sway over oil drilling, endangered species and other department issues. Murkowski and West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin, a Democrat who now heads that committee, opposed Biden’s plan to nominate former Interior Department official Elizabeth Klein as deputy secretary.

Missing & Murdered Unit created for American Indians, Alaska Natives justice

WASHINGTON – Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland announced April 2 the formation of a Missing & Murdered Unit within the Bureau of Indian Affairs Office of Justice Services to provide leadership and direction for cross-departmental and interagency work involving missing and murdered American Indians and Alaska Natives.
According to the BIA, the MMU will help put the full weight of the federal government into investigating these cases and marshal law enforcement resources across federal agencies and throughout Indian country.
“Violence against Indigenous peoples is a crisis that has been underfunded for decades. Far too often, murders and missing persons cases in Indian Country go unsolved and unaddressed, leaving families and communities devastated,” said Haaland. “The new MMU unit will provide the resources and leadership to prioritize these cases and coordinate resources to hold people accountable, keep our communities safe, and provide closure for families.”

MANCHESTER:
Pep Guardiola praised "exceptional" Borussia Dortmund striker Erling Haaland as he admitted Manchester City could spend the kind of money required to sign a player of his calibre.
City are one of several top clubs linked with a blockbuster move for Haaland in the close-season.
The 20-year-old Norwegian is the talk of Europe after scoring 33 goals in 32 games this season, while becoming the youngest player to reach 20 career goals in the Champions League.

Grizzly bears slowly expand their territory in the northern U.S. Rocky Mountains, scientists say

BILLINGS, Mont. — Grizzly bears are slowly expanding the turf where they roam in parts of the northern Rocky Mountains but need continued protections, according to government scientists who concluded that no other areas of the country would be suitable for reintroducing the fearsome predators.
The Fish and Wildlife Service on Wednesday released its first assessment in almost a decade about the status of grizzly bears in the contiguous U.S. states. The bruins are shielded from hunting as a threatened species except in Alaska.
Grizzly populations grew over the past ten years in two areas -- the Yellowstone region of Wyoming, Montana and Idaho, with more than 700 bears; and around Glacier National Park in Montana, which is home to more than 1,000 of the animals.

Indian Country welcomes Haaland to Interior

ROB CHANEY
PABLO — Minutes before the start of a Tribal Council meeting, Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribal Chairwoman Shelly Fyant took a moment to consider the confirmation of Deb Haaland as Interior Secretary.
“It gives me chills,” Fyant said. “Grandmothers all over the world are talking about the shift the world has taken — to have a Native American and a woman to serve an agency that hasn’t always done the greatest job in Indian Country.”
Overcoming opposition led in part by Montana Republican Sen. Steve Daines, Haaland earned a 51-40 vote in the Senate on Monday to join President Joe Biden’s Cabinet. As Interior Secretary, Haaland oversees the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Bureau of Indian Education, Indian Water Rights Office, Fish and Wildlife Service and other departments that have a direct impact on the Flathead Indian Reservation.

Haaland takes oath of office as Interior Secretary

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Deb Haaland took the oath of office to become the 54th Secretary of the Department of the Interior Tuesday in a small ceremony with family. The oath of office was administered by Chief of Staff Jennifer Van der Heide.
Haaland's first full day as Interior Secretary will begin Wednesday. A ceremonial swearing-in with Vice President Kamala Harris will be announced later this week.
Haaland issued the following statement on this historic moment:
“At my confirmation hearing, I said that we all have a stake in the future of our country. No matter your political party or Zip code, your ancestral heritage or income level, we all must take the formidable challenges that lie ahead seriously, and we will take them head-on, together."

Haaland confirmed in historic vote, setting stage for tackling issues including BLM HQ

The U.S. Senate confirmed the nomination Monday of Deb Haaland to become Interior secretary and the first Native American Cabinet secretary in history. Attention will now turn to what kind of history she makes on everything from the future of oil and gas development on federal lands to the status of the Bureau of Land Management headquarters in Grand Junction.
The Senate voted 51-40 to confirm the nomination of Haaland, a New Mexico Democrat who has been serving in the U.S. House of Representatives. She faced considerable opposition from Republicans.
U.S. Sens. Michael Bennet and John Hickenlooper, both Colorado Democrats, voted for her confirmation in preliminary votes, although neither could cast a final vote Monday because the weekend’s snowstorm delayed their flights back to Washington, D.C., from Colorado.

After she is sworn in, Haaland will be the first Native American to serve as a Cabinet secretary. In 2018, she became one of the first two Native women elected to Congress.
Serving as the U.S. Representative for New Mexico’s 1st congressional district since 2019, Haaland is a member of the Laguna Pueblo, a federally recognized tribe of Native American Pueblo people in west-central New Mexico, near the city of Albuquerque.

U.S. Rep. Matt Rosendale makes first visit to Montana Resources mine

MICHAEL CAST
Like a kid in a candy store, U.S. Rep. Matt Rosendale toured the Montana Resources mine in Butte Friday.
“When do I push the plunger?” said the Republican congressman, a reference to blowing the dynamite in the pit.
In his first ever tour of the mine, Rosendale saw the active Continental Pit, the shovel and haul trucks operating at full steam, and the mill.
He didn’t make it to the Berkeley Pit on this trip.
Rosendale inquired about ore grade, and asked how it compared to the proposed Black Butte mine.
Black Butte is a controversial underground copper mining project near White Sulphur Springs. Critics are deeply concerned the mine could affect the Smith River, and Rosendale is an adamant supporter of the project.

The Biden administration is backing a Trump-era decision for a road through Alaska's Izembek National Wildlife Refuge

Print article
The Biden administration is defending a Southwest Alaska land swap that was supported by the Trump administration, which aims to allow construction of an 11-mile road through the Izembek National Wildlife Refuge.
Residents in the Alaska Peninsula community of King Cove have long sought the road, arguing it would provide access to emergency care, but conservation groups have sued to stop it, citing the importance of the 310,000-acre refuge to migrating waterfowl and other wildlife.
The Department of Justice on Monday filed a legal brief in the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals defending a 2019 land exchange between the Interior Department and King Cove’s Alaska Native village corporation. The land exchange would pave the way for the road.
