Las Cruces filmmaker's 'Broken Gaiete' Best Feature at Santa Fe fest

A Las Cruces filmmaker recently won Best Feature Film in the 2021 Santa Fe Film Festival with his 2020 movie, “Broken Gaiete."
Hafid Abdelmoula, who is originally from Morocco, said most of his cast and crew are from El Paso and wanted to acknowledge their work. The production was filmed in Las Cruces.
Abdelmoula, who has lived in the United States for two decades, said he considers himself a multicultural hybrid, a Moroccan American. He has a Bachelor of Film from New Mexico State University and a Master of Fine Arts from the Vermont College of Fine Arts.
The movie was born from his graduate school thesis. It is about a man, Idir, who convinces his mother to live in some unknown village with strange rules. He must marry a woman from the village. He marries Beda, a woman who shares secrets with the village leader, and things take a strange turn when a rule about newborns is revealed.
