Syria to hold presidential election on May 26 - Newspaper

DAMASCUS: Syria will hold a presidential election on May 26 that is expected to keep Bashar al-Assad in power in the country devastated by a decade of civil war.
It will be the second vote since the conflict erupted in March 2011, killing at least 388,000 people since and displacing half the population, with no political solution in sight.
Western powers last month warned against a poll that would not be “fair or free”, and opposition figure Nasr Hariri denounced the forthcoming election as a “farce”.
The election, announced on Sunday by parliament speaker Hamouda Sabbagh, comes as Syria is also mired in a deep economic crisis, worsened by sanctions, the pandemic and financial turmoil in Lebanon.

Syria will hold a presidential election on May 26, a contest that critics have denounced as a charade aimed at handing President Bashar al-Assad another seven-year term.
Candidates can begin registering on Monday, parliament speaker Hamouda Sabbagh announced. Those seeking the highest office must also get the backing of at least 35 members of the parliament, where Assad’s Baath Party holds a majority.

Syria is to hold a presidential election next month, the country's parliament says - a move likely to maintain President President Bashar al-Assad's grip on power.
Mr Assad is not expected to face serious opposition despite continuing conflict and a growing economic crisis.
After 10 years of war the Syrian government controls most of the big population centres in the country.
About 400,000 people have been killed and over half of Syrians displaced.
The election for a president who will serve a seven-year-term will take place on 26 May, Speaker Hamouda Sabbagh said. Prospective candidates for the election would be able to register from Monday while Syrians abroad would be able to vote at embassies on 20 May.

Syria is to hold a presidential election on May 26, the parliament speaker announced Sunday, the country's second in the shadow of civil war, seen as likely to keep President Bashar Al-Assad in power.
Syrians abroad will be "able to vote at embassies" on May 20, Hamouda Sabbagh said in a statement, adding that prospective candidates could hand in their applications from Monday.
Assad, who took power following the death of his father Hafez in 2000, has not yet officially announced that he will stand for re-election. He won a previous election three years into Syria's devastating civil war in 2014, with 88 percent of the vote.
