A court in Malawi has ordered an Indian national to pay a fine of MK 700,000 (approximately 892U$) for calling a Malawian Human Right defender a ‘Dog’. The convict identified as Anand-Mandivar was arrested earlier this week after he called Happy Mhango of Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) a ‘Dog’. The court heard that the incident occurred at Kentama Mail in Mzuzu were the two were seeking the services of mobile money operator.   Passing the Sentence on Thursday, Mzuzu Senior Resident Magistrate Godfrey Nyirenda ordered the convict to compensate the victim with MK 700,000.

The Senior Resident Magistrate Court in Mzuzu has sentenced an Indian National, Anand Mandivar, to three months imprisonment but suspended to three years for insulting Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) chairperson for the North, Happy Mhango. Mzuzu Police Spokesperson Paul Tembo conformed of the arrest of mandivar. It is reported that the two collided last night at Kentam Mall in Mzuzu where they were trying to seek services from mobile money agent. Tembo said that Mandivar reportedly wanted to bypass a queue to get the service and when Happy Mhango, a rights activist tried to discourage him. Police say the two exchanged words which found the suspect allegedly using the demeaning words. The suspect has since been charged with using insulting language.
