A school bond measure passed a few years ago is breaking ground and bringing students and teachers new classrooms, among other things.
The Lucia Mar Unified School District is installing more than 90 new classrooms, HVAC systems, playground and more with funds from Measure J.
The bond measure passed in 2016 and gave the district around $170 million to renovate its 19 campuses.
“New desks, new chairs, new technology, everything in the classroom, almost everything is new,” said Director of Facilities Andy Stenson.
The renovation began with eliminating the oldest portable classrooms first. At Harloe Elementary alone, the district removed 14 portables and replaced them with 15 new classrooms.

The principal of Harloe Elementary School in Arroyo Grande has resigned.
According to the Lucia Mar Unified School District (LMUSD), Peter Ponomaroff resigned from his job effective Sunday, Feb. 28, 2021.
Starting Tuesday, school district officials say Brett Gimlin, LMUSD Curriculum Director, will assume temporary leadership of the school while the district looks for a new principal.
When asked, district officials would not disclose a reason for Ponomaroff's sudden resignation.
In a statement sent to KSBY News Monday afternoon, the district said, "We thank Mr. Ponomaroff for his many years of service to the District."

Another school district in San Luis Obispo County is back to in-person learning.
Transitional kindergarten and kindergarteners with Lucia Mar Unified are back in the classroom. This impacts 11 elementary schools within the district.
Wednesday, Feb. 24, was the first time since March 13, 2020, that nearly 30 students were able to sit behind a desk at Oceano Elementary School.
"I like school because I like to learn and have fun," said Valeria, a student.
A big sign and balloons welcomed the kids. Some have never been on campus before.

Two World War II veterans are celebrating birthdays on the Central Coast with one turning the big 100.
Welcome Home Military Heroes organized drive-by birthday salutes for 96-year-old Howard "Scotty" Scott in Arroyo Grande and for 100-year-old Kenneth G. Hart in Cambria.
Community members first gathered at Harloe Elementary in Arroyo Grade before making their way to Scott's House around noon.
Then participants drove at least an hour north to meet at the First Baptist Church in Cambria to salute Hart outside his home.
