The Nigerian Army says citing “loss of interest” and “low morale” as reasons for disengagement by soldiers will no longer be accepted as the basis for approval of voluntary retirement. The Nigerian Army has again approved the disengagement of a Warrant Officer and 17 others in various formations across the country.   SaharaReporters gathered that soldiers are expected to proceed on terminal leave with effect from January 15, 2023.   They are expected to be finally disengaged from the service from February 15, 2023.   The soldiers, drawn from various formations of the army across the country, are all junior cadres who are mostly fighting against terrorists and insurgents.

The Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen Faruk Yahaya, has denied claims that some soldiers of the Nigerian Army resigned from the service due to pressure, adding that soldiers are used to pressure. SaharaReporters had recently reported that 243 soldiers in the North-East and other theatres of operation applied to the Chief of Army Staff for voluntary retirement. The action comes amid worsening security challenges the military is currently combating in most parts of the country.
