London Mayor election: How range of joke candidates led to record 114,000 ruined ballots

A dizzying range of joke candidates left voters so baffled a record number of ballots were rejected in this month's London mayoral election.
Around 114,000 ballots were spoilt after the first round of voting because the 20 candidates packed onto a sheet of A4 paper confused voters into either accidentally ticking the first-choice column twice or choosing too many contenders.
Labour candidate Sadiq Khan went on to secure victory in the May 6 election and has been awarded a second term as Mayor of London with 1,013,721 first-choice votes.
But with the four rows of candidates featuring mainly jokesters, public opinion may have become 'disenfranchised', according to one politics expert.

UK Conservative Party Scores 'Historic' By-election Win Against Labour

UK Conservative Party Scores ‘Historic’ By-election Win Against Labour
Britain’s ruling Conservative Party scored a major victory on Friday when it won the parliamentary seat for Hartlepool, a traditional Labour stronghold, for the first time since it was created almost 50 years ago.
Conservative candidate Jill Mortimer took the seat, which had been Labour-held since it was formed in 1974, with a majority of 6,940.
Mortimer gained 15,529 votes—more than half the total cast—with Labour’s Dr. Paul Williams trailing with 8,589.

Everything you need to know about the Hartlepool by-election

BORIS Johnson will find out for the first time this week how the new ‘blue wall’ is holding up, whilst Sir Keir Starmer will face the first major ballot box test of his leadership as voters in Hartlepool elect their new MP.
It is a seat long held by Labour and the party fought off a strong Conservative and Brexit Party challenge at the 2019 general election, although their majority was reduced to just under 3,600, down from 7,650 in 2017.
But despite holding on to Hartlepool, the red wall across the north crumbled, handing Boris Johnson the keys to No 10, so the by-election will give an indication of whether Sir Keir has been able to reverse the process that has seen Labour’s heartlands disappear.
