When the asteroid flies by, it will be travelling at a staggering 3.6 kilometres per second, or or almost 13,000 kilometres per hour. While that may seem fast, it is actually relatively slow by asteroid standards. The average space rock travels at a speed of anywhere between 11 kilometres per second, and 72 kilometres per second.
