Deputy Health Minister prosecuted for involvement in fake cancer drug case Deputy Health Minister Truong Quoc Cuong and 13 others are facing charges for their role in ing counterfeit cancer medicines labelled as Health 2000 Canada, VNA reported the new indictment issued by the Supreme People’s Procuracy. Deputy Health Minister Truong Quoc Cuong. (Photo: VNA) Cuong and two other officials – Nguyen Viet Hung, 66, former deputy head of the Drug Administration of Vietnam, and Le Dinh Thanh, former Ho Chi Minh City Customs official – are being prosecuted for “negligence causing serious consequences” under Article 285, Clause 2 of the 1999 Penal Code. According to the indictment, from 2008 – 2010, two of the accused prepared applications for seven drugs branded Health 2000 Canada so they could be authorised to be circulated in Vietnam. Although the documents were all fabricated, the drugs were later approved by a number of officials. Between November 2012 and June 2014, Cuong and his accomplices faked a range of documents to change the origins of the medicines to import some 838,100 boxes of the medicines into Vietnam. They were then resold to drug stores, hospitals and pharmaceutical businesses. Cuong worked as head of the Drug Administration of Vietnam from 2007 to 2016 and took legal responsibilities for all activities of the office. He was said to lack responsibility in assessing and granting licences for the drugs; and lacked supervision and examination over those assessing and registering the drugs, leading to the approval of the applications for the import and consumption of the counterfeit drugs in Vietnam. After the drugs were imported and consumed in Vietnam, although he received information about their suspected origins, Cuong did not ask authorities to stop their circulation, or recall and destroy the drugs. As a result, many health establishments still traded and supplied the counterfeit drugs without clear origins to treat patients. (Photo:getty) Futsalplanet.com recently published a list of top 10 nominees for its annual UMBRO Futsal Awards, including Vietnamese goalkeeper Ho Van Y of Thai Son Nam club. In 2021, goalkeeper Van Y made an impressive performance at the FIFA Futsal World Cup. He helped the Vietnamese team cruise into the Round of 16 and only lose 2-3 to powerhouses Russia. In Vietnam, Van Y and his club Thai Son Nam won the National Futsal Championship for the sixth time in a row. This is the second time in his career that goalkeeper Van Y has entered the top 10 nominees list for the Best Goalkeeper in the World. In 2018 the Vietnamese goalkeeper was also nominated in the top 10 by futsalplanet.com, but he failed to finish in the top 5. In 2018, Van Y and his club Thai Son Nam finished runners-up at the Asian Football Confederation Futsal Championship. He scored a goal against Nagoya Oceans of Japan to help Thai Son Nam win 3-2 in the dramatic quarter-finals. Seafood exports beat yearly target, rake in US$8.9 billion Thanks to large-scale production in the last months of 2021, the seafood export value for the whole year rose 6% compared to 2021 reaching more than US$8.9 billion, according to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP).Photo source: VOV Seafood exports beat the 2021 target thanks to large-scale production by year-end. The result is beyond expectations, and it even beat the US$8.8 billion export target set earlier for the whole year, noted VASEP.  VOV cited the sayings of VASEP that the prolonged COVID-19 outbreak had seriously impacted seafood production and exports, especially in the third quarter. However, the Government’s adopted strategy of living safely with COVID helped seafood processors maintain production and supply chains in the last months of the year. Thanks to sound performances, seafood exports increased sharply by 23% in November and by 29% in December, hitting more than US$940 million. Last year, the United States remained the largest consumer of Vietnamese seafood, spending more than US$2 billion on imports, up 26% year on year, and accounting for 23% of Vietnam’s export turnover. The European Union market accounted for 12% of total turnover, with over US$1 billion, up 12% compared to 2020. Meanwhile, seafood exports to CPTPP countries brought in about US$2.2 billion, almost equivalent to 2020. Overall, seafood was one of the six leading export items of the agro - forestry – fishery sector in 2021, as its export value made up 18.3% of the sector’s US$48.6 billion export total. Other key farm produce were wood products, cashew nuts, rubber, fruit & vegetables and rice./.
