MLK Day events postponed until February

One of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s most admirable traits was his patience. Appropriate, since the recognition of his legacy will wait until February this year.

Juneteenth Festival this Saturday celebrates freedom, new national holiday

Last year, things were different.
The situations involving individuals like George Floyd and Breonna Taylor made for a solemn and unsettled mood. Voices to be heard, things to be said. Somerset held a charette in observance of Juneteenth — a public gathering to work things out, discuss important issues, and work together for a solution.
But to everything there is a season. Last year's Juneteenth was a season for somber reflection. This year is a season for joy.
This Saturday, Somerset will play host to its first Juneteenth Festival, ushering in a new era both for the community and for America itself.

In his 1963 commencement address at American University, the late President John F. Kennedy famously said, “If we cannot now end our differences, at least we can help make the world safe for diversity.”
Here in Somerset — thanks to the tumultuous summer of 2020 — local people are working on making this community at least, if not the world itself, safer for its own diversity to flourish.

Rocky Hollow Park has seen a number of improvements made recently — and they'll be on display this weekend at the City of Somerset's "Saturday in the Park" event from noon to 2 p.m.

"Sunday in the Park With George" was a beloved Steven Sondheim musical, but the City of Somerset can do him one better — by moving that date in the park up a day.
"Saturday in the Park" is the latest outdoor event planned by the City of Somerset, as a chance to get outside, get some exercise and fresh air, and get acquainted with the new-look Rocky Hollow Park downtown.

Local members of the Black community respond to Chauvin verdict

File
The headline maker of the week was the outcome of the Derek Chauvin trial in Minneapolis.
Chauvin was found guilty on Tuesday of three charges — third-degree murder, second-degree unintentional murder, and second-degree manslaughter — relating to the May 2020 death of 46-year-old African-American George Floyd. Chauvin, a white officer with the Minneapolis Police Department, knelt with his knee on Floyd’s neck for almost nine-and-a-half minutes while making an arrest, an action determined to have led to Floyd’s death.
Along with Chauvin, three other officers at the scene were also arrested — Tou Thao, J. Alexander Kueng and Thomas Lane. The incident sparked unrest in the Minneapolis community and around the country, as well as a national discussion about overuse of force by law enforcement and how it relates to issues of race.
