Supplied Police were called to the Heyward Point area, about 25 kilometres out of Dunedin, on Wednesday afternoon after a person's body was found on the beach. (File photo) The death of a person whose body was found on a Dunedin beach is not being treated as suspicious. The area is named Whareakeake, formerly known as Murdering Beach. A police spokeswoman said after an autopsy on Friday morning, police were not treating the death as suspicious. The matter would be referred to the coroner. Stuff
Whareakeake is a small and secluded north-facing beach, separated from Long Beach by a high headland. A thriving Māori trading village was based there until a conflict with sailors from a European whaling ship in 1817 led to a massacre of the village’s inhabitants, according to the Dunedin website.
