New Certification Program addresses need for virus-free vines


The Canadian Grapevine Certification Network is changing the landscape of grapevine certification.
On March 8th, 2021 the Canadian Grapevine Certification Network (CGCN-RCCV) released amendments to its Certification Standards. These amendments include the development of an entirely new set of standards called ‘Certification Program, Option 2 Protocols’ and minor changes to the original Certification program that has now been renamed ‘Certification Program, Option 1 Protocols.’ Both of these protocols are available on CGCN-RCCV’s website in English and French.

Robotics platform could revolutionize how labs track the spread of COVID-19, other pathogens
A robotics platform designed by Toronto researchers to screen thousands of COVID-19 samples at once has the potential to revolutionize how labs track the spread of viruses and other pathogens, according to new findings.
The study, out Wednesday in
Nature Communications, found that the next-generation, ultra-high-throughput sequencing platform, called C19-SPAR-Seq, designed by researchers from the Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute (LTRI) at Sinai Health, has a sensitivity rate greater than 95 per cent in positive cases during peak onset.
Identifying positive samples quickly and accurately is critical in beating this pandemic.With new and potentially dangerous variants now circulating, this is a platform that is scalable, automated and capable of analyzing thousands of COVID-19 patient samples in a single instrument run. ....

As new variants emerge of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), the pathogen causing the current coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, continue to circulate, early identification and sequencing have become a necessary part of research in this area. This virus is known to be shed from the nose, the lungs, the saliva, urine, and feces.
A new study, published on the
medRxiv preprint server, reports the use of metagenomics to detect the virus from wastewater samples, indicating community-level circulating variants that are not yet identified or are present in very low proportions on clinical databases. ....
