First in SE Asia: Art Jakarta fair goes completely virtual

Entering the 12th edition of Art Jakarta, or Oppo Art Jakarta Virtual 2020, is like stepping into an alien world – at least for some of the people used to its physical format.
In its new, online form, the art fair may initially be confusing to visitors, but once you have entered the virtual space, it offers an exciting experience that can be navigated from the comfort of the living room, or even from your bedroom for that matter.
“This fair format has been conceived to help energize the slumping creativity in the art world in Indonesia that tends to be falling into oblivion. Galleries have closed their doors, and artists face challenges in continuing their creative activities, let alone selling artworks,” explained the fair’s director, Tom Tandio.

All of us are affected by the various issues caused by the global Covid-19 pandemic. In order to contain the spread of the virus, countries around the world have enforced a variety of measures which have led to multidimensional complications. This unprecedented situation has also led to the decision to postpone Art Jakarta 2020 by a year, to 2021.
For the last 12 years, Art Jakarta has been an integral part of both Indonesia’s and Southeast Asia’s art ecosystem. Close cooperation and involvement of all stakeholders, especially in Indonesia, are crucial components of the magnificent experience Art Jakarta represents, and the very reason for its existence.

Remapping the spice route: Understanding the history of Indonesian flavors

The diversity of local cuisine and spices across Indonesia has given rise to an array of unique flavors.
However, the notion of spice trade purely as a product of colonialism is still rampant – with memories of the spice route poisoned with violent confrontations.
The Education and Culture Ministry's director general of culture, Hilmar Farid, said that spices played a very significant role not only in Indonesian cuisine but in the country’s history.
Hilmar, a speaker in an online discussion titled “The Diverse Flavors of Indonesia”, organized by the Periplus bookstore chain, said the government began an initiative to “rebuild” the spice route four years ago.

The Culture Directorate General of the Education and Culture Ministry has announced that it has teamed up with the Irama Nusantara Foundation to digitize Indonesian music.
Both set the target to digitize 1,000 releases by the end of this year, which will be available to the public on Irama Nusantara’s website.
The ministry’s culture director general, Hilmar Farid, said they planned to digitize music from various genres from across Indonesia. “We’ll also digitize various sounds as cores of music, including oral traditions,” Hilmar said during a press conference on Thursday.
The collaboration is said to be part of Law No. 5/2017 on cultural promotion, which aims to form an integrated cultural data collection system. “It’s not about creating more projects in the database, but connecting numerous on-going initiatives and forming an integrated cultural system,” Hilmar said.

The phrase Indonesian literature might bring to mind memories of school assignments and required reading, but a new literary initiative is poised to appeal to the digital crowd.
Sandiwara Sastra (Literary Play), a joint collaboration between the Education and Culture Ministry, the Titimangsa Foundation and KawanKawan Media, is adapting a variety of Indonesian literature into audio plays, perhaps taking note from the rising popularity of podcasts and audio books.

The Education and Culture Ministry and Tourism and Creative Economy Ministry have released joint guidelines for the cultural and creative industries as they resume activities amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
The joint ministerial decree (SKB) allows public places such as museums, movie theaters and galleries to reopen and for production houses, actors and performers to resume their normal activities with the permission of the local government.
“The ministries only provide health protocols but local administrations have the authority to allow certain activities according to the COVID-19 status of the region,” The Education and Culture Ministry’s culture director general, Hilmar Farid, said during a press briefing on Tuesday.

Cultural institutions, creative minds and tech enthusiasts have teamed up to provide integrated data on Indonesian cultures, but problems remain.
The Education and Culture Ministry will set up a data portal that features a range of information in varied forms — text, photos and videos — collected by both the government and private institutions about Indonesia’s diverse array of cultures. The portal is scheduled to be up and running later this year.
With easy public access in mind and cultural advancement as its end goal, the open cultural data will enable the public to use, share and even to modify the information into works of art, stories, educational mobile applications and games.

TVRI - Netflix Partnership for Global Diversity, says Govt

Card image cap

Jakarta - The Education and Cultural Affairs Ministry’s director-general of cultural affairs, Hilmar Farid, explained that the partnership between state-broadcaster TVRI with Netflix - namely its documentary programs - is to enhance the knowledge of Indonesian students towards science.
“This is for global diversity (
kebhinekaan). The programs are focused on planet earth and science documentaries,” said Hilmar in the House of Representatives (DPR) hearing today on June 22.
Hilmar elaborates that the partnership between TVRI and the popular global streaming service had begun since January 2020.
He also said that the Education Ministry had not spent a dime to broadcast the documentaries that are valued over millions of dollars, which is why he asserts that partnerships such as these had never happened before.

Classic meets pop in virtual charity concert

Classical music is not necessarily something people associate with online streaming, but the Jakarta City Philharmonic’s (JCP) most recent (virtual) concert does just that.
Broadcast live on
YouTube on May 22, the
Berbagi dalam Keterbatasan (Sharing in Confinement) concert featured some of Indonesia’s most popular musicians, such as singer-songwriter Melly Goeslaw, jazz guitarist and songwriter Tohpati, and actor-singer Maruli Tampubolon.
The concert opened with the national anthem “Indonesia Raya”, as is the norm at Indonesian concerts regardless of genre.
Conducted by Budi Utomo Prabowo, the orchestral rendition of the national anthem was as aurally glorious as can be, though the sight of musicians in formal wear in their own virtual boxes like in a teleconference is rather jarring to see.

Anantarupa Studios
Jakarta-based game developer Anantarupa Studios has launched Indonesia's first multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) game: Lokapala. It will soon enter the country's professional gaming competitions, which have previously been dominated by foreign-made games.
Anantarupa and publisher Melon Indonesia, a subsidiary of state-owned telecommunications giant Telkom, launched the game on the Google Play Store on Wednesday.
“After two years of hard work and collaboration with comic artist Ragasukma, animation studio Kratoon, composer Elwin Hendrijanto and audio production house INharmonic, we present you the first local esports game in Indonesia,” Anantarupa managing director Diana Paskarina said.
Anantarupa director Ivan Chen said they chose to develop MOBA as their data showed that 67 percent of esports enthusiasts preferred the genre to others such as first-person shooters, third-person shooters and real-time strategy.

The page is a collaboration between Google Arts & Culture, the Education and Culture Ministry and the Jakarta administration.
Hilmar Farid, the ministry’s culture director general, said
wayang was more than just an art work and performance.
Wayang kulit (shadow puppets made from leather), for instance, has been designated as one of the Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.

Virtual settings provide a new home for self-expression for the dance community as it is deprived of its stage.
Slump in productivity and cashflow concern are among the most severe impacts of the global health crisis, which also hit the dance community. But the show must go on.
“I have talked to various dance communities in different parts of Indonesia. And if I may conclude, the gist [is that they] yearn to be back, performing again,” said Ratri Anindyajati, a dancer and art performance producer.
As a survivor of COVID-19, identified as Case No. 3, Ratri took the opportunity to become the ambassador of

Online theater performance give artists a voice amid pandemic

The performance began with a narration about plagues in the past. The narrator, accompanied by the sound of water in a pool, told the story of “Plague in an Ancient City”, a 17
th century painting by Michiel Sweerts that is believed to portray a deadly plague that hit Athens in 430 BC. He continued to the ancient Greek poem
The Illiad, which also contains parts about a plague.
Afterward, the screen split into four parts with the main one showing footage of the COVID-19 disease. The first part showed a person washing
empon-empon (mixed spices), another showed a black-and-white photo with a silhouette of a person dancing and the last displayed a woman sleeping on her bed. The three parts constantly moved, showing different activities performed by actors who wore masks throughout the performance.
