Maryland expects to receive shipments of the yet-to-be cleared Johnson & Johnson vaccine as soon as next week, Gov. Larry Hogan, a Republican, said Tuesday.
Hogan said the federal government notified states that allocations of the single-dose shot, which is being manufactured in Baltimore, could be delivered soon, a development that could help a vaccination effort beset by crushing demand and limited doses in the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia.

When social media website Parler's founding CEO John Matze was pushed out last month, it was at the direction of a quiet but powerful political megadonor backing the right-leaning site.
Rebekah Mercer, the 47-year-old daughter of major Republican donor Robert Mercer, is a founding investor of Parler. She increasingly pulls the strings at the company, according to people familiar with the company who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss private business matters. She holds the majority stake in Parler and controlled two of three board seats as of early February - a board to which she recently appointed allies.

WASHINGTON - President Joe Biden was on the cusp of his first Cabinet defeat Monday as two closely watched GOP senators announced their opposition to Neera Tanden, his pick to be the nation's chief budget official, potentially dealing a major blow to an administration that has struggled to fill top posts across the government.

One campus, in Maryland, temporarily canceled in-person classes after coronavirus infections surged past 60 cases two days in a row. The other, in Virginia, kept classrooms open even after it logged 229 cases in a single day.
The region's flagship universities - the University of Maryland at College Park and the University of Virginia - have tracked an alarming uptick in the number of viral cases on campus. And each school has taken a different approach to curbing the spread, illustrating the tensions and uncertainty of trying to operate major research universities in the pandemic and preserve public health.

WASHINGTON - By the light of 500 candles as "Amazing Grace" played outside the White House, President Joe Biden bowed his head in a minute of reflection on the 500,000 American lives lost to the coronavirus, crossing himself after the music faded out.
Moments earlier, the president noted that the U.S. death toll from the pandemic has exceeded both world wars and the Vietnam War combined.
"The people we lost were extraordinary," Biden said in the White House's Cross Hall. "They span generations. Born in America, immigrated to America. But just like that, so many of them took their final breath alone in America."
