Imagine sitting there 16 hours waiting to be rescued. hailing, pouring winds, sitting there on top of you. now you re freezing cold on top of all that. the severe alert moved out. a strong alert. now just a light rain. unfortunately, back behind it not much bet perp looks like the storm s back building. looks like it will stay stormy in the joplin area for a while. one more large area of hail in the last half hour. happened yesterday. this is as impressive as it gets. the radar from the joplin area when the tornado hit. the magenta is the heavy rain wrapping around the storm. call that a hook echo like a fish hook, guaranteed tornado. this is a debris ball. a term we ve been using a lot. when the tornado picks up the shingles, whatever s on the ground, tosses it up into the storm. of course, our radar bounces off that. it appears to us like that s a really heavy area of rain, but that s actually the debris as the tornado went through the ....
L lin. just wiped a clean swathe wherever it traveled and that went right through the heart of joplin, missouri. i heard about it last night around 6:40 in the evening local time. it went through about 5:30, they had about 20 minutes warning and this was the radar. you can see the magenta, that s the hook echo, the twisting of the storm p about and whe the storm. the white is the debris ball. the storm was so powerful, it took the roof, trees, threw it up in the air. there are reports of stuff falling 60 to 70 miles away, x-rays from the hospital. and severe weather reports were right through the middle of the country. i don t want to leave the friends out in minneapolis, you dealt with a tornado and fatality on the north side of town, too, but what happened in joplin was a rare event where we had a very strong large tornado through a populated area. 50,000 people live there and not one of those people was not ....
